The Doom and Gloom of January?

In keeping with British tradition, January is the month where everyone is allowed to be a bit glum; Christmas cheer has gone, along with the acceptance of drinking at any hour of the day and eating as much as you can. Last year, January 17th was actually named ‘Blue Monday’ due to it being the most depressing day of the year. Miraculously this was before the day had even begun. Clever scientists. But fear not! January may be a bit chilly (warning to Erasmus people: it’s worse than before Christmas) but don’t let that get you down. A return to the Bubble can only be seen as a positive thing!

Firstly, returning to Warwick is the perfect excuse to show off what you got for Christmas and what you managed to find in the sales. The streets of campus are your catwalk.

Secondly, going back home for Christmas is great but nothing beats the freedom of living in your student abode, be it on campus, in Leamington or in Coventry. If you’re returning to your student accommodation on campus, be prepared to welcome back regular fire alarms. These should be welcomed, for nothing beats spontaneously catching up with neighbours at 3am.

Thirdly, although the January sales now start in December, there are still many things to buy at a reduced price. It is only a matter of time before the Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream in Costcutter is reduced again – a joyous occasion welcomed by everyone on campus. A discount on the Ristorante pizzas is long overdue.

Lastly, nothing beats a night out in Smack, something which no doubt everyone has missed over the Christmas period. Better venues do exist, but you can guarantee seeing people you both like and dislike in Smack. And after many vodka Red Bulls everyone is best friends, all rejecting the myth of January being full of doom and gloom.
