Warwick Golf impress in Ingolstadt Matchplay

Warwick University Golf Club once again put in a fine display at the World Student Matchplay Championships held in Germany during June 2011. They managed to secure a fourth place finish and automatically attain an invite for the university into the competition for next summer’s edition.

The golf club overcame strong opposition from an international field to win their group on the first day, beating several universities including Cardiff, Zürich and the hosts Ingolstadt University, with Warwick’s Tim Reynolds shooting one of the lowest (and best) rounds of the day.

This meant the team qualified for the semi-finals on the second day. Unfortunately, it was at this stage where Warwick failed to cause an upset as they narrowly lost 3-1 against last year’s winners and defending champions Pretoria.

Despite this, Warwick’s Sam Ward played some impressive golf to overcome his South African counterpart. Pretoria eventually fell to a very strong side from Queen’s University of Belfast in the final.

Nevertheless, the incredible team effort ensured that our golf club continues to have the impressive record of finishing in the top four of this prestigious competition on four occasions since it began in 2006; a consistency only matched by the University of Pretoria.

As well as doing the golf club proud, this success affirms Warwick University’s reputation on the world stage in sporting achievement. It is hoped that the players representing our university in next year’s championships can go some way to emulating this past accomplishment.

This performance will also stand the golf team in good stead for the upcoming season. After coming agonisingly close to promotion to the BUCS Premier League in the last two years, Warwick Golf will be aiming to go one better this year and secure its place in the division’s top flight.

The close play-off defeats against Newcastle and Leeds – on both occasions losing by just a single point – will no doubt spur the team on to add to Warwick University’s increasing list of sports teams in the BUCS Premier League.
