It can often feel as though the summer months and male style are at odds with one another. Whilst girls long ago reached an agreement with summer – shout out to the play suit – we men still have some deeply unresolved issues. One need only turn to surf shorts, socks with sandals and t-shirts printed with ‘funny’ phrases when looking for evidence of this troubled relationship. Thankfully, A/W ’11 brings with it new opportunities for a style truce. Here are four key items to help you achieve this:

**Tweed and/or Herringbone**: These quintessentially British fabrics rarely go out of style. As well as being easy on the eye, both have a warm woollen texture that is soft to the touch. Just as you thought it couldn’t get better, the timelessness of both materials means you’ll find a large selection of great items available for relatively cheap prices at charity stores, vintage shops and on eBay.

**Coloured Knitwear**: For an unknown reason many drift towards grey or navy blue around this time of year. However, dull weather needn’t mean dull clothes. Consider brighter knitwear in a range of weather defying blues, oranges, and bright reds. The braver amongst us may well be tempted by bright, chunky knit sweaters. If you don’t want to look quite so pronounced, online retailers currently stock a selection of knitted coloured socks, hats and scarves, all of which should help you achieve something more understated.

**Wedged Sole Boots**: If the last few years are something to go by, then a pair of snow resistant boots will prove a sound investment this winter. Remember that practicality and style are not mutually exclusive. So instead of rushing over to your local army surplus store, why not consider wedged sole boots? These can range from a brogue design to an adapted boat shoe. Overall, the contrast between their white soles and brown or black body creates a more refined look in comparison to the ubiquitous boy band military boot.

**Indigo Jeans**: Simple, but they do a great job. Lighter shades are liable to discolour due to rain puddles or deep snow; meanwhile dark blue indigo jeans typically maintain their appearance. They can be purchased from just about anywhere in cuts ranging from straight, skinny, slim, carrot, boot cut or relaxed.
