Discover Islam week

Last week the Islamic Society hosted ‘Discover Islam’ week on campus, with its aims to inform and educate a range of Muslims and non-Muslims about the religion.

Weeks 8 and 9 featured a series of talks covering a diverse range of topics including philosophy, religion and world finance. In addition, the period included workshops, film screenings and performances of a more general interest.

The cultural night which took place on Friday titled ‘Witness the culture of 1.5 billion people’ focused on languages and perspectives from a recently converted Muslim.

Hassan Talal Maitla, the President of the Islamic Society commented that with this long-standing tradition of this event, the Islamic Society wants to “clear up many misconceptions” that many people have towards the Islamic community.

Haikal Yeo, a first-ear Mathematics student who took part was enthusiastic about the event; he said that he enjoyed the talk and that the speakers were “very lively and interesting”.

Since the week ended, ideas and plans for next year’s event are coming into place. Hassan emphasised his recommendations for a cross-religions interface event next year, aiming for harmony between different religious groups at Warwick.
