Battle of the Bands Heat Two

The second chapter of BandSoc’s annual competition rolled around last week, maintaining the unusually high standard set by heat one.

After only reaching the semi-final last year, the presidential Black Dogs opened the show to a lively crowd, launching them straight into the final. Their polished set of blues rock songs never fails to impress.

Cannibal Fish’s indie rock – a style heard infrequently amongst BandSoc ranks – managed a well deserved runner up place. Some accomplished vocals and guitar work held together their catchy tunes, but the Black Dogs’ rhythm section was far more confident and accurate.

The familiar sound of prog rock just missed out on a place in the finals. On paper Digital Earth are one of the best bands in the competition – they are masters of their instruments and have recently been joined by Alyssa Davison of Hot Magenta fame – but unfortunately it was quite a lifeless set.

Some more prog rock by Clockwork Heart, a lively performance by Gerard Butler At His Finest and the rather bland but promising Operation Condor rounded off an enjoyable evening.
