Amnesty International fined by Uni
Amnesty International Society has been fined £700 by the University for damage to University property.
Last term Amnesty hosted Protect the Human Week during which an actors troupe was to present a piece for the Asylum Seekers Monologue in the Ramphal building. While they were setting up the stage they tried to move the computer stand in the room and accidentally broke it.
At the end of the break Amnesty was informed that it owed the University £700 and the University contacted the Students’ Union. Amnesty, one of the largest campaigning societies on campus, reportedly only has £200 in their society account.
They have applied for emergency funding from the Union but as the Boar went to press the application had not yet been processed.
The exec are unsure how this application and fine will affect future funding.
Lucy Reynolds, Societies Officer in the SU, said that they would have to accept the fine as the Union was not able to challenge it.
“We will try to help them out,” she said, explaining that they will most probably be given a loan from the Societies Committee.
These loans are interest free and are paid back as the society can afford it. They are offered to societies who face crippling fines to save them from becoming insolvent.
