I Am Your Autopilot are a self-professed ‘Electronic/Folk/Experimental’ group, and the debut album from this Manchester-based trio, Robots in the Orchestra has received much praise for its simplistic, effortless and gentle sound.

Their efforts to recreate the genius of such artists as Simon & Garfunkel are distinctly noticeable in the compositions, and are at their most effective in ‘All in our Hands’, arguably the best track on the album.

I fear, however, that the success of this album in other reviews has been shaped by the current musical trend towards rewarding diversity and the alternative.

Indeed, it is a departure from the current trend in the charts, but where other similar artists and bands who fall into the Chill Out and Cinematic bracket succeed, I Am Your Autopilot fail.

They are simply not gripping.

Listening to Robots in the Orchestra is a truly frustrating experience, always waiting for the song to take off, but instead becoming infuriated by the lacklustre in front man Ben Evans’ Vocals.

Despite this, there is promise, and they will be one-to-watch, but my current advice would be to look to Patrick Watson or Aqualung if you are looking for a new ‘chill out’ experience.
