Pint of Purple: Lucy Skoulding, Deputy Books Editor

What book are you reading at the moment?

Amongst my masses of reading as an English Lit student I am (very slowly) reading a novel called Me Before You by Jojo Moyles. It’s a heart-warming story about a woman trying to get a quadriplegic man to realise that he can still enjoy life. It acts as a reminder that I do still love reading, which can sometimes be easy to forget when you’re buried in course books.

Wow that’s pretty hard so I’m going to cheat a little bit and say several. I love strong female characters like Hermione Granger and Jane Eyre. However I also have to give Charlie from The Perks of Being a Wallflower a mention because everything he says is so true when you stop and think about it for a minute.

What is the first book you remember reading?

The Noughts and Crosses series by Malorie Blackman. I must’ve read things before this but this stands out for me as the first thing I read and really got into. It’s about the world being divided into two groups of people – noughts and Crosses – and the forbidden relationship that occurs between a nought and a Cross.

What is your all-time favourite book?

3309651121_84a66351b7I have to say Harry Potter even if it is cliché. I’ve read all of them way too many times to count and would go back to them again. The plot is so detailed and complex that the story never gets old and I love the characters. As well as this I really loved Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca since its one of the only books I’ve read that really shocked me – I did not expect that ending!

If you wrote an autobiography, what would be the title?

Probably something along the lines of Oops I Fell Over Again because I do tend to spend a lot of my time being clumsy. It’d have to have a subtitle of But It’s Fine Because I’m Happy since I do always try to be optimistic and happy because what’s the point of being otherwise?

Kindle vs. Book?

I do own a Kindle which is really handy for taking on holiday and also for cheap (sometimes free) books so I’m not at all against them but I have to admit that nothing beats a physical book.

How much is a pint of purple?

Urm I think something like £1.50 but I can’t actually remember for certain (despite going to Pop lots in my first year).
