Varsity 2026: Warwick Swimming triumphant after blowing competition out of the water

Warwick’s swimmers continued the University’s Varsity success after a totally dominant performance in the Sports and Wellness Hub on Saturday afternoon which saw the home side triumph with a score of 70 points versus Coventry’s 34.

During the first block of races, Warwick won all but one of the seven events, with particularly striking victories in the Mixed Medley Relay and Men’s 100m Backstroke, in both of which Warwick finished almost an entire length ahead of the opposition. Warwick also sealed victories in the women’s and men’s 200m Freestyle, the women’s 100m Backstroke, and women’s Medley Skins.

As seems to have been in the case in a few other events, Coventry were unable to field swimmers in certain races, such as the Men’s 100 Butterfly

Coventry had their only victory of the first session in the Men’s Medley Skins, which sees a random stroke selected and the slowest swimmer knocked out of each round. Coventry were fastest in the first round—breaststroke—which saw one of our swimmers knocked out. In the second round, butterfly was selected and the Warwick swimmer reacted late, essentially giving the Coventry swimmer a headstart. It seemed as though this wasn’t going to matter for the Warwick swimmer, who maintained a strong pace and quickly caught up to his competitor, although he just missed out on the win, giving Coventry their only victory of the event.

Going into the second half of the first session Coventry’s dominant performance continued with triumphs in the 50m Breaststroke and 100m Butterfly. The afternoon seemed to be defined by Warwick’s racers remaining relatively consistent with one another, often taking an early lead and finishing almost half a length in front of their Coventry opponents. As seems to have been in the case in a few other events, Coventry were unable to field swimmers in certain races, such as the Men’s 100 Butterfly which saw two Warwick students racing one another in what ended up being a pretty close contest.

Then it was onto the Individual Medleys and 4×50 relays. In both the women’s and men’s IM, Warwick were again victorious with the women taking an early lead in the first leg, while the men’s race remained relatively even for the first two lengths before Warwick began to pull away going into the final stint. The same was true of both relays which saw Warwick comfortably pull away in the final legs of each (particularly the men who finished almost three quarters of a length ahead of their opponents) in order to end the first session with a comfortable lead over Coventry.

The Women’s 50m Backstroke was the closest call of the day, and from a spectator’s perspective it was hard to determine who won the race

Competition really began to heat up going into the second session, which saw Coventry take an early lead in the first race—the Women’s 200m IM. Although, Warwick quickly caught up with a slight edge in the third stint. The men’s version of this event was another in which Coventry were unable to produce a swimmer and saw a lone Warwick student take part.

We then moved onto the more competitive races, which saw a much fiercer and tighter field throughout. Although some of these races were close, Warwick still came out on top in the 50m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke and 50m Butterfly races. The Women’s 50m Backstroke was the closest call of the day, and from a spectator’s perspective it was hard to determine who won the race.
The story remained very much the same for the Men’s 50m Backstroke and both 100m Freestyle races which saw another 3 Warwick victories (with no Coventry racer entering the Men’s 100m Freestyle).

It was then time to move onto the 4×50 Medley Relays. The women were up first and for the first two lengths it was very close, but on the third stint Warwick extended their lead and were about a quarter of a length in front. In the final stint the Coventry swimmer was very strong, but it was not enough to overthrow the home team.

The men’s relay saw an even more dominant display from Warwick, who were virtually a whole length in front after just the first leg. The butterfly stint was equally strong, and the relay finished with Warwick over a length in front—a very appropriate way to finish what was a triumphant afternoon for Team Warwick!
