Is genre still relevant?

Genre is a pivotal part of musical composition, helping both artists and fans to celebrate different facets of the art. It allows artists to both classify their music as a specific style and to push boundaries, using different sounds to bridge the gap between genres and reinvent them, creating new, original, fresh sounds. Simultaneously, genre provides listeners with a framework in which they can differentiate sounds by means of categorisation, informing them of their listening preferences. Genres, however, can also serve as a gateway tool for them to experience genres they wouldn’t have considered before, especially as artists conflate genres as a celebration of variation within music. Therefore, the question must be posed: Is genre still relevant?

In 2026, genres intersect heavily, and numerous fusions between previously distinct genres emerge. These fusions, however, aren’t to be devalued. In fact, they can create beautiful sonic soundscapes. For instance, Travis Scott, a psychedelic rapper, utilises synths and electric guitars – typically associated with the rock genre. This unexpected yet creative blend of genres, drawing influence and inspiration from a wide range of music throughout the entire industry, creates mellifluous music.

Defining sound would not be possible without genres, but they act more as a restraint on the creativity and innovation of musicians. Many genre defying works are now established classics. To Pimp a Butterfly, an album by Kendrick Lamar, is acclaimed to be one of the most pivotal albums from the 2010s, as acknowledged by the academy at the time, who awarded it ‘Best Rap Album’ for 2016. Its accolades can in part be owed to the emotive reflections on childhood trauma, police brutality, and black masculinity, as reflected in the lyricism. Nevertheless, they must also be owed to the album’s production. To Pimp a Butterfly in genre pertains to experimental hip hop, jazz rap, and conscious rap. The spoken word and jazz in collaboration enable the album to become an increasingly immersive listening experience. If genres acted as restraints, this album would not have been possible.

This blending of genres is present, if not dominant, in the discographies of many other artists. XXXTentacion, for example, is able to be acknowledged as a versatile artist due to his music being a manifestation of his broad taste, in which he was inspired by artists from Papa Roach and Lil Wayne to bands like Nirvana and Three Days Grace. His discography is a blend of genres, drawing from rock, R&B, and rap.

In 2026, music continues to evolve and thrive as a hybrid of various genres, creating an industry where innovation is rampant. Even trap music can incorporate classical references, utilising instruments such as the piano, horn, and trumpet. It is more diverse.

We can only hope that one day we can fully let go of the concept, which will allow us to have more unique collaborations in the future

Music is way more malleable and open to the blending of genres. This has been defined by some as a trend in the music industry referred to as “mood over label”, which essentially refers to how music and media are curated with a priority of the atmospheric ‘mood, as opposed to having to fit a traditional genre. Listeners have led this movement, as their listening habits show a growing interest in emotive content, which has led to this trend. 

The preference for genre blending is a much larger ongoing process, influenced by a broad range of factors. A potent example to consider is the phenomenon of increased feelings of nostalgia, which often leads to periods of revival. With people yearning for a bygone era, especially when technological advancements and societal changes can overwhelm individuals, artists incorporate motifs from these periods into their contemporary sound to satiate these feelings.

Genre is confusing. Our incessant need to categorise and order art has led to genre becoming complex, which has led to genre-blending being increasingly dominant in the music industry. We can only hope that one day we can fully let go of the concept, which will allow us to have more unique collaborations in the future.
