Varsity 2026- Women’s Netball achieve landmark victory against disheartened Coventry
As Varsity entered its closing stages, and equipment elsewhere in the Sports and Wellness Hub was being cleared, Warwick Women’s Netball were still yet to face rivals Coventry, in what was a decisive 60-12 victory. Their opponents showed some promise in the game’s early stages but a combination of a lack of endurance and too much unsportsmanlike conduct is what caused them to trail, allowing Warwick to achieve a well-deserved final 2 points from the Varsity weekend.
Warwick started with the ball, taking an early lead almost immediately. On the next restart, Coventry were unable to match their opponents quick scoring, as Warwick’s WD intercepted a pass, deflecting the ball away from Coventry’s WA. Coventry eventually regained possession, but poor passing saw the ball thrown out of the court and play returned to Warwick. Unfortunately, an incomplete pass from Warwick’s GA led to Coventry moving the ball into their opponent’s D and even in spite of some strong defending from Warwick, Coventry scored shortly after, tying the scores.
One of Warwick’s strength in the first quarter was their ability to maintain momentum and capitalise on opportunities, even on Coventry restarts
The same can be said of the rest of the first quarter, which saw both Warwick and Coventry scoring alternately and in quick succession, with scores reaching 4-4 shortly after. It was in the latter stages of this quarter however where Warwick seemed to pick up the pace, and after maintaining composure (and an unfortunate tumble from Coventry’s GD in one instance) Warwick took the end of Q1 score to 10-4, scoring the final goal right as the buzzer sounded.
One of Warwick’s strength in the first quarter was their ability to maintain momentum and capitalise on opportunities, even on Coventry restarts, and this continued into Q2. Although, it was Coventry who had the stronger start initially scoring two goals (including one particularly impressive shot from their GA) taking the score to 10-6. One thing Coventry seemed to struggle with throughout the match was their obstruction, as the umpires had to get involved on several occasions, telling them to next to their marked player, due to previously getting to close—this is what led to a lot of Warwick’s goals.
This was true as Warwick scored their next few goals, taking the score to 13-6 before Coventry very quickly returned and scored themselves to make it 13-7. Although, this was the last time in the first half that Coventry scored, as they failed to capitalise on any of their possessions going forward. The same could not be said of Warwick, who had an impressive end to the half and after some brilliant intercepted passes and a slightly disheartened opposition, took the scoring at the end of the half to 26-7.
It was in this second half of the match that two of Coventry’s players began to struggle again with obstruction and contact, with the umpires having to have a word with the GA and GD before play could resume. Even in spite of this, Warwick’s GA continued to frequently make contact with and impede Warwick’s players, meaning the home side was essentially gifted several unobstructed passes.
Coventry’s GD (the aforementioned GA) was also sent off due to her continued contact and unsportsmanlike conduct; much to the delight of the Warwick support who cheered as she was sidelined
As before, Warwick made a quick start to make it 27-7, before Coventry finally regathered their composure to score their 8th goal of the match. Although this was short-lived, a long period of shared possession saw both the GA and GD given even more warnings for their unsportsmanlike behaviour. Warwick scored four more times in quick succession before Coventry started to regain momentum, scoring a further two times, taking the score to 31-10.
After another Warwick goal and another impressive goal from Coventry’s GA (who seemed to have regained her composure), Warwick set out on a scoring streak, with the score sitting at 38-11. It was at this point, however, that Coventry’s GD was sent off due to the number of warnings she had been given by the umpires, as she was forced to sit on the side lines for two minutes, and her team faced a period with one less player on the pitch. In order to compensate for this, Coventry’s players shuffled around, with the previously mentioned GA taking on the role of GK before immediately obstructing and essentially gifting another goal to Warwick. The home side scored two more goals during this stage of the game before their GD was allowed back onto the court, and the score at the end of Q3 sat at 42-11.
As the final quarter began, spirits were certainly low for Coventry, who started with the ball but returned possession to Warwick almost immediately. Warwick scored a further 4 goals very quickly into this half before Coventry’s GD (the aforementioned GA) was also sent off due to her continued contact and unsportsmanlike conduct; much to the delight of the Warwick support who cheered as she was side lined. Coventry again found themselves a player short, allowing Warwick to score another 5 goals before she was allowed back on the court again.
It was in this quarter that Warwick’s performance reached its peak as the team totally dominated. Their momentum was constant and at every opportunity, they skilfully passed the ball into the opposition’s D and scored on almost every occasion, with the score sitting at 59-11 with just minutes remaining. Coventry were able to score their first goal of the quarter and final goal of the game in this time, but it was Warwick’s decisive 60th goal on the buzzer that caused excitement to crescendo as supporters erupted at full time—a well-deserved reaction to a truly incredible performance from Women’s Netball.
