Varsity 2026: Rampant Warwick flattens Coventry in 9–0 Men’s Football win

Warwick Men’s Football Club stormed to victory over rivals Coventry as they struck an astonishing nine goals past their despondent opponents.

The game, beginning early on an overcast Varsity Day 2, started off sluggishly, with both teams slow to get into any real rhythm. Pressure fell onto Coventry from the outset, but there were few genuine opportunities for Warwick. Coventry goalkeeper Will Shanahan emerged as a standout player in shutting down any attempts by the home team to get goal-side, prompting Warwick’s side to grow listless. The opportunity was snatched by their opponents, who briefly burst down the pitch. The momentum was then derailed by an injury to a home player – an injured shoulder, according to the linesman – which dragged on longer than it should have owing to the bizarrely relaxed pace of the first aid team as they made their way across the pitch.

28 minutes in, the deadlock was broken by striker Isaiah Akinlabi, one of the side’s most prolific players of the season

The reset proved dearly needed for Team Warwick, who resumed play in far higher form. 28 minutes in, the deadlock was broken by striker Isaiah Akinlabi, one of the side’s most prolific players of the season, who fired in a volley from in front of goal. That spark seemed to rouse both players and supporters alike, as Coventry responded with a frenetic counter hoofed out the pitch by a Warwick defender. A few moments later, defender Joe Gardiner slotted a set-piece-launched ball past Shanahan to make it two goals in five minutes.

Several more attempts on the Coventry goal followed, spearheaded by striker Philip Umoren who received his fair share of stick from the home fans for the missed chances. A potential third goal was disallowed for offside, before Matti Makadsi confirmed the 3–nil lead at the death of the first half, a shot that sent the Warwick players pounding towards the pitchside photographer in celebration.

Energy was far higher from the outset of the second half, helped by the subbing on of the clearly-celebrated defender Harry Hickles, to chants of “Hickles Mourinho”. His distinct defending style of slamming the ball to the other end of the pitch whenever it had the misfortune to cross his path earned huge praise from the supporters, who had by now grown in numbers.

Chants of “Coventry are going down” greeted the full-time whistle, as Warwick completed its most definitive victory over their city-dwelling opponents in years

Just minutes into the half, a close-range ball from Jesse Ojediran rebounded off the keeper, right into the path of Umoren who redeemed his earlier slip-ups by converting it straight into a 4–0 scoreline. Only six minutes later, the striker completed his redemption by scoring a brace from admirable distance. Coventry thereafter seemed to fall apart: after forcing Warwick keeper Cochran to make what felt like his first save of the game 60 minutes in, they became totally unable to get the ball out their own half.

In progressively heavier rain, Warwick became rampant: Nael Wargui scored from a distance to make it six for the home side, before Umoren nearly made it a hattrick with a narrow miss past the post. Thomas Evans-Alcantara scored with a shot that Shanahan, previously so in-form, basically watched roll into goal, before the defender Alex Lavery poked in what was surely his first goal in ages, based on the reactions of his teammates who thronged the ecstatic player.

At the eye-watering scoreline of 8–0, there was only thing left, as supporters began to cry out for Hickles to be put upfront to net his own goal. With seconds left on the clock, the defender suddenly burst down the left-hand side, rounding two Coventry players to slam the ball home to its final tally of 9-against-nothing.

At that, the crowd seemed to lose their minds, as teammates and supporters swarmed the triumphant Hickles-Mourinho. Chants of “Coventry are going down” greeted the full-time whistle, as Warwick completed its most definitive victory over their city-dwelling opponents in years.
