The 2026 official trailer: What to expect in cinemas this year
The past year of cinema, though perhaps not as memorable as 2024, brought us some iconic movie moments. We had Ryan Coogler’s captivating vampire period-piece Sinners with its striking cultural messages, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another starring the legendary Leonardo DiCaprio, and James Gunn’s hopeful take on Superman which brought the online community together, albeit briefly.
The year also came with many sequels, reboots, and new adaptations of old classics, such as Zootopia 2, 28 Years Later and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. We will see this trend continue in 2026, as well as some interesting new stories on our screens. Here are some highly anticipated films to look out for.
THE MOMENT – AIDAN ZAMIRI (JANUARY 30)
Charli xcx has been an unstoppable force in the world of music and art since the release of her critically acclaimed and widely adored album brat and she’s not stopping any time soon. Created with a close collaborator of hers, The Moment is a mockumentary of her tour, if everything were to have gone completely wrong.
Charli xcx will be playing a fictional version of herself (she’s her own “favourite reference, baby”) alongside Alexander Skarsgård, Rachel Sennott, Kylie Jenner, Jamie Demetriou, and more. This new artistic venture from the popstar is sure to be exciting and entirely different to what we usually see from successful artists – it will likely be a moment to remember.
WUTHERING HEIGHTS – EMERALD FENNELL (FEBRUARY 14)
Brontë’s classic Gothic novel, often revered as the greatest love story of all time, is making a fresh appearance on the big screen in 2026. From the director of Promising Young Woman and Saltburn comes another surely controversial film which has already provoked a variety of strong opinions.
With Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff and Margot Robbie as Catherine, the trailer promises passion, romance and drama, but recently released pictures of Robbie’s costumes as well as the interesting casting choices have left fans of the novel doubtful. All will be revealed on Valentine’s Day.
THE BRIDE! – MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL (MARCH 6)
In November 2025, Victor Frankenstein and his monster gave us gore, horror, and perhaps an existential crisis, courtesy of director Guillermo del Toro. This year, however, the misunderstood creature makes a comeback in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, which sees the monster gain a new companion – his very own bride. The film, set in 1930s Chicago and starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, gives a well-known tale an unexpected twist, with police chases and crime mysteries. This monstrous movie is certainly one to keep an eye on.
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 – DAVID FRANKEL (MAY 1)
The Devil Wears Prada is a classic romcom for lovers of fashion and the typical 2000s makeover. We’ve all seen it, we all love it, we all undoubtedly hate Andy’s boyfriend. Celebrating 20 years since it was released, this year is bringing us The Devil Wears Prada 2 with the director, writer and our favourite stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci reprising their original roles. We know little of the plot as of now, but we do know this sequel will be a must-watch for fans of the original – that’s all.
THE ODYSSEY – CHRISTOPHER NOLAN (JULY 17)
Ever the ambitious filmmaker, Christopher Nolan returns this year with an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. The star-studded cast features Matt Damon as Odysseus trying to return to his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, after the Trojan War. With Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal also in the cast, there is no doubt this movie will be a huge hit, although we will have to wait until summer for this one…
2026 will surely see audiences back in cinemas enjoying all the new releases from action and comedy to horror and drama, with countless big names and plenty of new faces. As well the films mentioned, many more such as Avengers: Doomsday, Supergirl, Dune 3, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and Spiderman: Brand New Day will be gracing the silver screen this year. While it is hard to tell how the various remakes and sequels will be received by the public, 2026 is certainly promising something for everyone!
