Going for Gold: Introducing Team GB’s Official Lineup for the 2026 Winter Olympics
Team GB is sending a total of 53 athletes to Milano Cortina to compete across a range of sports at the 2026 Olympics. From Alpine skiing to Bobsleigh, the British Olympic Association has athletes competing in 11 different sports. After only winning two medals at Beijing in 2022, the hopes are high for a more successful outcome this time around.
There are many athletes worth watching, most notable of which is Dave Ryding. The most successful British skier of all time has announced that this will be his fifth and final Olympics, following on from his World Cup victory in 2022 at Kitzbühel. Ryding is an alpine ski racer with a particular affinity for slalom, one of the four races under the umbrella category of alpine racing, alongside downhill, giant slalom, and super-G (super giant slalom).
[Matt Weston] is viewed as Team GB’s greatest gold medal chance
Zoe Atkin is another skier to watch. She competes in freestyle skiing, specifically in half-pipe. She’s poised to be one of Team GB’s top chances at a medal this year, following on from her recent gold medal win at the X Games super-pipe in 2026. She’s the younger sister of Izzy Atkin, the freestyle skier who won bronze in women’s slopestyle at the Olympics in 2018, earning Britain their first Olympic medal in Skiing.
Off the slopes, Matt Weston and Marcus Wyatt are both set to compete in skeleton. Weston is the current world No.1 in skeleton, as well as the world champion, and he has stated, “I don’t ever stand at the top of a start run aiming for anything less than gold.” He is viewed as Team GB’s greatest gold medal chance in Milano Cortina. Wyatt is just as promising of an athlete, finishing only 1.9 seconds behind Weston at the last World Championship.
[I am] incredibly proud to have the opportunity to return to the world’s biggest stage
Niall Treacy, Short Track Speed Skater
There has been a bit of surprise, however, when it was revealed that the double Olympian Nick Gleeson had been excluded from the GB bobsleigh squad. The British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association has declared that this is due to Gleeson switching from a brakeman position to a pilot, resulting in him not acquiring the sufficient qualifications to meet the Olympic level set by the British Olympic Association. His supporters have criticised this choice, saying that his strength, skill, and build are far superior to those of other athletes who made it onto the squad.
UK Funding cuts have also led to disappointment for the GB speed skating team, with only a single member, Niall Treacy, confirmed for the games. Treacy competes in short-track speed skating and has said he is “incredibly proud to have the opportunity to return to the world’s biggest stage.”
Team GB is sure to have a good chance at improving on their medal tally from 2022
With so many athletes competing across different sports, Team GB is sure to have a good chance at improving on their medal tally from 2022. The Olympics are running from the 4th to the 22nd of February, with the action kicking off with Curling.
