The 2026 Golden Globes fashion recap
As January rolls around, so do the annual Golden Globe Awards. This year marks the 83rd awards ceremony, broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The Golden Globes celebrate the outstanding performances and casts of television and film. Although we all look forward to seeing our favourite nominees, crossing our fingers that they win one of the iconic Golden Globes trophies, which are said to weigh a considerable amount, it’s a guilty pleasure to see what they wear on arrival.
We become a sort of Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada, all while being wrapped up in blankets, wearing our pyjamas in bed and stuffing down a takeaway. It is brilliant.
The classic black or blue tuxedo does not seem to hold the same timeless reputation anymore
What makes these entrances so important in the fashion world is their ability to be given the title of ‘iconic’, becoming timeless fashion statements that go down in history. Some examples include Marilyn Monroe in 1962, wearing an emerald sequined dress, and Cher in 1973, with her Studio 54 style, featuring a heavy fur and a groovy ensemble. However, other looks have gone down in history for the wrong reasons, with critics arguing that they should have been immediately consigned to the burn pile.
To start, let us begin with the male fashion. It is no secret that male fashion can sometimes be underwhelming at award shows. The classic black or blue tuxedo does not seem to hold the same timeless reputation anymore. Rather, it has become a cliché and can be underwhelming next to the extravagant looks of some female fashion pieces.
In the wise words of British actor Damson Idris, “It’s Prada, darling”, many took to the red carpet in Prada’s beautiful suits. Michael B. Jordan appeared wearing a chocolate brown double-breasted Prada suit, with Vogue commenting that “brown is the new black this season”. Damson Idris took to the carpet again in Prada, after his viral line back in 2024 at the Met Gala, where he wore a three-piece tuxedo with a mint shirt. Prada not only showed off some of their beautiful custom suits, but also dressed actress Hailee Steinfeld in a silver sequinned peach dress. In that moment, she shocked us all, revealing that she is expecting her first child.
Yet, sometimes simple is simply better. There seemed to be a theme of simplicity on the red carpet, with actors opting for the classy white or black dresses
Some of the other male actors came to the carpet with a different style from the traditional suit. Timothée Chalamet, Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, walked in with his Timberland boots and outfit from Chrome Hearts, reminding us all that this is a true New Yorker. Snoop Dog also appeared with a custom Talia Coles red and black suit that had many approving of the pop of colour and sunglasses.
We must not forget, new to the scene, English actor Owen Cooper, best known for his role as Jamie Miller in the recent series Adolescence, who entered all in grey Bottega Veneta. He left the awards as a Golden Globe winner for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series. The psychological crime drama Adolescence earned five nominations and won four. An incredible night for the cast alongside their fashion looks, with Golden Globe winner Erin Doherty for Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television collecting her award in a black Louis Vuitton gown.
Now onto our female fashion statements. Let us begin with our favourite ‘Pretty Woman’, the one and only, Julia Roberts, who arrived at the Golden Globes in Giorgio Armani Privé, with a strawberry pendant from Swarovski, and a Tyler Ellis clutch.
Yet, sometimes simple is simply better. There seemed to be a theme of simplicity on the red carpet, with actors opting for the classy white or black dresses: Emily Blunt in Louis Vuitton, Brittany Snow in Danielle Frankle, Selena Gomez in Chanel and Amanda Seyfried in Atelier Versace and Roger Vivier.
Some critics label (Jennifer Lopez’s) look unoriginal and argue that the ‘half-naked trend’ she often favours is becoming boring
Although the styles that stood out were ones that had something a little more niche. Canadian model and media personality Sabrina Elba wowed many in a nude vintage gown by Guy Laroche, with The Daily Mail writing that she looked “effortlessly chic”. Sequins can be either the best decision or the worst, but Kate Hudson, our beloved Andie Anderson, pulled off an elegant dress from Armani Privé. Alongside Hudson, Ana de Armas appeared in a stunning black sequin dress by Louis Vuitton, and Leighton Meester in a custom lavender Miu Miu gown. Golden Globe winner for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, Teyana Taylor incorporated sequins by wearing a sequin bow on the back of her Schiaparelli Haute Couture, which sat on her lower back.
On the other hand, not everyone impressed critics, with many celebrities receiving backlash for certain fashion choices. Jennifer Lopez arrived in an archival Jean-Louis Scherrer spring/summer 2003 gown, which drew mixed opinions. Some critics label her look unoriginal and argue that the ‘half-naked trend’ she often favours is becoming boring.
Regardless of your own fashion taste, something important to take a moment to recognise was that of the anti-ICE pins some celebrities wore in support of Renee Good. An interview with actor and Golden Globe nominee, Mark Ruffalo, was one of the few who spoke up against the current events in America: “I’m not feeling so great… I don’t know if I could pretend, like, this crazy stuff is not happening…this is for her… Renee Good.”
“BE GOOD” is a simple phrase. Unfortunately, it has become something that we must remind others of. The pins are not an accessory but an action of activism, shining a light on the events currently occurring in America.
