Why I am making the most of Christmas and why you should too

As much as autumn is a beautiful season, the effects of cinnamon and pumpkin-themed decorations wear out, and let’s face it, autumn has been and gone. But just as you’re about to give up on it all (at least until warmer weather), you hear a bell jingle. You smell a pine tree, or see lights twinkling in the trees, or the greatest song ever created starts playing in your head (it’s ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham, and I don’t take suggestions). And suddenly, all your cares have disappeared because it’s finally Christmas!

The joy and hope of Christmas can act as solid land, being a time of light in the darkness of winter

There’s a reason it’s called the Christmas season; this time of the year is meant to be savoured and enjoyed, and serves as the only glimmer of light and hope in the dark, dreary months of winter. In fact, it goes many steps further than a glimmer by replacing the sun on those days (or weeks or months) when the sun doesn’t come out at all. This year, with all the world events that are affecting so many people, it can be hard to stay above water, but the joy and hope of Christmas can act as solid land, being a time of light in the darkness of winter.

Christmas can be such a good way to spread some joy to your family and friends – especially with gift-giving! It is definitely true that giving gifts is just as good as receiving them (or at least, almost as good), especially if you really put heart into choosing the right gift. If you’re crafty like me, a handmade card always goes a long way: bonus points if they’re customised for the recipient. Otherwise, edible treats are never refused (this includes drinks obviously). As long as the thought is genuine, then it truly is the thought that counts.

The smell of Christmas food mulling around markets and kitchens, paired with the crisp smell of frost, does wonders for nostalgia and the Christmas spirit

Food inevitably becomes one of the best parts of the holiday season, including the controversial Brussels sprouts, and other firm favourites such as gingerbread, a roast dinner (or two), and mince pies. The smell of Christmas food mulling around markets and kitchens, paired with the crisp smell of frost, does wonders for nostalgia and the Christmas spirit.

Speaking of nostalgia, nothing gets you in the feels as much as music. Obviously, there are the classic Christmas playlists, whether you prefer pop, old crooners, or the Michael Bublé covers. But besides that, people need to realise how good classic carols are. Seriously, go and see a stuffy old Christmas concert at least once this Christmas, because nothing beats that part of ‘Silent Night’ – you know the one I mean.

Even the Grinch was converted to Christmas, and wasn’t he so much better for it?

As well as Christmas music, Christmas films are lifesavers when it comes to killing time after it gets dark at 4pm. Home Alone has not yet been beat, but films like The Holiday, Love Actually, and Arthur Christmas come pretty close. Even the awful Hallmark/Netflix productions can be enjoyed (looking at you, Vanessa Hudgens).

Even the Grinch was converted to Christmas, and wasn’t he so much better for it? If you still don’t agree with me, then there really is no saving you: the Scrooge-itis is beyond cure. Otherwise, if you have been thoroughly convinced, then put up your Christmas tree, garlands, and stockings. Let the festivities begin!
