Manchester City extend winning streak against Everton to go top of WSL
Manchester City took on Everton away from home and wrapped up a hard-contested battle with three points to dethrone holders Chelsea at the top of the table.
All-time leading WSL goalscorer Vivianne Miedema added to her growing goal tally with her 90th league goal
City, who are hoping to win their first Women’s Super League trophy since 2016, were able to boost their title hopes with a resolute win over Everton, which saw them leapfrog six-in-a-row winners Chelsea to take top spot on the table. All-time leading WSL goalscorer Vivianne Miedema added to her growing goal tally with her 90th league goal, opening the scoring for the visitors in the 21st minute by drilling past keeper Ramsey after winger Iman Beney split open the Everton defence with a perfectly weighted through ball. However, Everton did not go down without a fight and levelled the game in the 40th minute when Toni Payne delivered a low cross into the box and Kelly Gago scored with a first-time back-heel finish.
Yet in the second half, City responded promptly, with the prolific Bunny Shaw heading home in the 54th minute from a Leila Ouahabi cross, which turned out to be the winner. Although City claimed all three points, Everton will hold their heads high after putting on such a spirited performance against the top four outfit, registering more shots on target, hitting the woodwork, and winning more corners than their opponents. Another positive for City to take from the match, aside from the victory, was the return of winger Lauren Hemp from injury, who made her first appearance since late September. Her availability will massively boost her side’s title hopes.
It will be no easy feat for City to pick up their second ever WSL title
This season, Manchester City appointed former Denmark Women’s national team coach Andrée Jeglertz, finally finding a successor to former boss Gareth Taylor, who was sacked in March 2025. They opened their WSL campaign against holders Chelsea, suffering a 2-1 defeat away from home. Since then, they have remained undefeated, picking up wins in all seven of their remaining fixtures, which puts them in 1st with 21 points – one ahead of Chelsea, who are also unbeaten but have picked up two draws compared to City’s zero. Their most notable win was a 3-2 thriller against the European Champions, Arsenal, in which Chloe Kelly’s long-range equaliser against her former club was cancelled out by a late Beney winner. Their biggest scoreline came in a 5-1 thrashing of Martin Ho’s Tottenham. They have also been victorious over London City Lionesses, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Liverpool, yet have only picked up one clean sheet, which came in an uninspiring 1-0 win against bottom-of-the-table West Ham.
It will be no easy feat for City to pick up their second ever WSL title, with undefeated holders Chelsea hot on their tails, Manchester United enjoying a promising start to the campaign, and Arsenal keen to translate their European success into domestic dominance, regardless of their rocky start. Despite their best efforts over the past few seasons, Manchester City have fallen short time again. With a stacked squad, a new manager, and a winning mentality, could this finally be the season they get over the line?
