Autumn capsule wardrobe: The essentials to keeping warm and stylish this season
With the autumn/winter season now in full swing, shops are full of muted, warm tones, jumpers, and hoodies galore. It can be quite overwhelming walking into a shop or scrolling endlessly through websites, so here is The Boar’s guide to creating the perfect A/W capsule wardrobe.
First things first, everyone needs a good pair of jeans. As we enter the winter months, I tend to reach for a pair of dark-wash jeans rather than a lighter wash. A good-quality pair of jeans will become one of, if not the most versatile, items in your wardrobe.
That being said, some people consider jeans to be formal or uncomfortable. A good alternative option is a pair of jogging bottoms. Personally, I think a wide-leg jogger is the best choice, as they are the most comfortable and can be dressed very easily.
Gone are the days when wearing a jacket would ‘ruin your outfit’ and you would be forced to brave the cold to show off your new top
Another key piece, in my opinion, is a knitted jumper. A chunkier knit works best in winter, and a finer knit for autumn. They can also be layered with your coats. I would also recommend having a good quality hoodie as we enter the colder months. Whether lounging around the house or layering under a jacket or coat, a hoodie is the perfect option to keep yourself warm as the temperature drops.
On the topic of outerwear, I believe that in recent years, the jacket has become increasingly popular (particularly among young people). Gone are the days when wearing a jacket would ‘ruin your outfit’ and you would be forced to brave the cold to show off your new top. Clothes shops (both affordable and designer) seem to be putting much more emphasis on their outerwear, particularly given the comeback of the trench coat.
At the moment, you will be sure to spot at least one trench coat in every shop. The item itself has become incredibly versatile, as we are seeing this coat produced in several different colours and lengths. For instance, the “cropped” trench coat is currently a micro trend online.
If the trench coat isn’t for you, the humble leather (or, more realistically, pleather) jacket should not be underestimated. This is yet another way to dress up any outfit. It balances being informal enough that you can reach for it every day. A slightly oversized or boxy jacket suits a more informal style, and a fitted option is better for formal.
Living in the UK, we are no strangers to a shower or two, and with a suede shoe, you are asking for trouble
In terms of accessories, another winter essential is scarves. Whether this be a chunky, blanket-style scarf, or a thinner and much shorter one, scarves are the perfect way to elevate an outfit, and keep warm! Their versatility is one of their most attractive qualities, as they can be styled in several different ways depending on the occasion. They can also be paired with a matching hat and gloves in the Winter months for an even cosier look.
Next are shoes: the most practical pair of shoes to own in the A/W season would be a pair of durable trainers. While you may find yourself reaching for a pair of Adidas Gazelles or Spezials, I would be hesitant at this time of year due to the rain. Living in the UK, we are no strangers to a shower or two, and with a suede shoe, you are asking for trouble. Although they are versatile shoes, I would reach for something less likely to suffer from wear and tear. For example, a pair of New Balance or even an Adidas Samba, which is predominantly leather.
One final suggestion (and perhaps the most popular for the season) is a pair of boots. Whether they are black or brown, ankle or knee height, the boot is an immensely versatile piece that will provide the finishing touches for your capsule wardrobe. They are so easy to dress up, but can also be dressed down when paired with jeans and a jumper. While I have yet to add these to my own collection, they are absolutely at the top of my wish list!
If your wardrobe consists of these items, you really can’t go wrong. By choosing such versatile items, you are presented with an (almost) endless array of possibilities for your outfits without having to wear the same drab clothing all the time: your outfits can still be stylish and exciting even when the weather turns!
