Autumn capsule wardrobe: The essentials to keeping warm and stylish this season

With the autumn/winter season now in full swing, shops are full of muted, warm tones, jumpers, and hoodies galore. It can be quite overwhelming walking into a shop or scrolling endlessly through websites, so here is The Boar’s guide to creating the perfect A/W capsule wardrobe.

First things first, everyone needs a reliable pair of jeans. As we enter the winter months, I tend to reach for a pair of dark-wash jeans rather than a lighter wash. A high-quality pair of jeans will become one of, if not the, most versatile items in your wardrobe.

That said, jeans aren’t for everyone. If you find them too formal or uncomfortable, a pair of jogging bottoms is the perfect alternative. Personally, I think a wide-leg jogger strikes the balance between comfort and effortless style and can be dressed up or down with ease.

Gone are the days when wearing a jacket would ‘ruin your outfit’ and you would be forced to brave the cold to show off your new top

Another essential, in my opinion, is a knitted jumper. A chunkier knit works best in winter, and a finer knit in autumn. Both can be layered with outerwear. A good-quality hoodie is also worth investing in – ideal for lounging at home or layering under a jacket as temperatures drop.

In recent years, the jacket has become increasingly popular (particularly among young people). Gone are the days when wearing a jacket would ‘ruin your outfit’ and you would be forced to brave the cold to show off your new top. Retailers, both affordable and designer, are now placing far more emphasis on outerwear, especially given the return of the trench coat.

You’ll find at least one trench coat in almost every shop this season, available in a variety of colours and lengths. The cropped trench, in particular, is a micro-trend that’s gaining traction online.

If the trench isn’t for you, the humble leather (or more realistically, pleather) jacket should not be underestimated. It’s an easy way to elevate any outfit, balancing casual and smart. Go for a boxy fit for a relaxed look or choose a fitted cut for a sharper edge and more formal situations.

When it comes to shoes, practicality is key. A durable pair of trainers is a must-have for A/W

In terms of accessories, another winter essential is scarves. Whether this be a chunky, blanket-style scarf, or a thinner and much shorter one, scarves are the perfect way to elevate an outfit, and keep warm! Their versatility is one of their most attractive qualities, as they can be styled in several different ways depending on the occasion. They can also be paired with a matching hat and gloves in the Winter months for an even cosier look.

When it comes to shoes, practicality is key. A durable pair of trainers is a must-have for A/W. While you may find yourself reaching for a pair of Adidas Gazelles or Spezials, I would be hesitant at this time of year due to the rain. A suede shoe is asking for trouble – instead, opt for something more weather-resistant, such as a pair of New Balances, Air Forces, or even an Adidas Samba, which is predominantly leather.

One final suggestion (and perhaps the most popular for the season) is a pair of boots. Whether they are black or brown, ankle or knee-high, the boot is an immensely versatile piece that will provide the finishing touches for your capsule wardrobe. You can dress them up easily or dress them down if you pair them with jeans and a jumper. While I have yet to add these to my own collection, they are absolutely at the top of my wish list!

If your wardrobe includes these staple pieces, you really can’t go wrong. By choosing such versatile items, you will have an (almost) endless array of possibilities for your outfits without having to wear the same drab clothing all the time: your outfits can still be stylish and exciting even when the weather turns!
