‘The Nook’ social space opens on campus
A new social space, The Nook, has opened on campus, promising students a place to ‘pause’, ‘meet’, and ‘discover’ during busy days at university.
The Nook, which was designed by the Student Experience Team, opened on 9 October in the Atrium Building of the Students’ Union, next to Curiositea and Unitemps.
The space was designed and opened as a way for students to unwind from their studies and relax – a “Pause” for students that would like a quiet social space.
Students who may be less socially confident will also be supported by the space, which has been designated as a safe place to foster new connections at university.
The space will also be used by Together at Warwick to host weekly ‘Community Lounge’ events, including postcard-making workshops and board game sessions.
It is a good and different place to use for studies, meetings, resting, and reflecting. Its design was perfectly catered for students
Zabir, second-year student
Zabir, a second-year international student from Bangladesh, described The Nook as a “very subtle psychedelic social space – quiet yet interactive.”
He told The Boar: “It is a good and different place to use for studies, meetings, resting, and reflecting. Its design was perfectly catered for students. I can tell this was likely designed by a student.”
Students also highlighted the built-in daybed or sofa area, with Zabir emphasising how students could use it for a “rest or nap between lectures”.
The Nook also offers free journals to all visitors in an attempt to allow more students to unwind from their busy lives and have a way to reflect on it.
Various books can also be found in The Nook, available for any visitor to read, including wellbeing books like The Business of Sleep by Vicki Cuplin.
On the University’s website, The Nook is described as a “brand-new space […] created for students to pause, meet, and discover.”
Its mission statement of “Pause”, “Meet”, “Discover” is also highlighted to emphasise the space’s goals and aims.
