A guide to the only shoes that you will need at university
It’s that time of year again, when it’s time to stock up your university wardrobe for all those 9ams that you’ll definitely be making it to. Arguably, one of the most important items to invest in is a good pair of shoes, whether that be purely for practicality or as the finishing touch to your new outfits. To save you some serious time (and money), here are the four essential pairs you’ll need for a new year at Warwick.
You will never regret paying a little more for trainers that are going to last all year
First, it’s always a good idea to invest in a pair of sturdy, long-lasting trainers. University life offers endless opportunities to try new activities that get you moving, even if you’re not in a sports society. Durable, versatile shoes are worth every penny, so make sure they won’t mark indoor courts and can handle plenty of wear. You’ll never regret paying a little more for trainers that last all year. Specialist shops often provide free fittings and gait analysis, while mainstream retailers such as JD Sports and Sports Direct (you can find both in Cannon Park), offer super accessible student discounts!
Next, you’re going to need some shoes that are easy to take on and off – essentially, shoes with no laces, such as Crocs, sliders or Uggs, perfect for quickly whipping on if there’s an unexpected fire alarm, an emergency trip to the campus Co-op, or simply for walking around your corridor and kitchen (unfortunately, halls of residence seem to remain somewhat of a biohazard). There are so many options of shoes here, available in a whole range of prices from a whole range of retailers. The only real advice is to try and find something with a sturdy sole so you can wear them outdoors if needed. Avoid soft indoor slippers – one winter walk through Warwick rain and their cosiness will never recover.
Of course, you’ll also want a staple everyday shoe for your actual days on campus – something that can take you to lectures, coffee dates, pool in the union, or for grabbing lunch from the food trucks. All you need to think about is whether or not they’re comfortable all day (no one wants blisters by midday on a Monday), and if fashion is important to you, go for a pair that matches most of your wardrobe. Current student favourites include Adidas Sambas, New Balance 550s, or, of course, a classic pair of Converse All Stars. On a budget? High street stores, in Coventry and Leamington Spa, such as Zara, H&M, or Primark, often make dupes that look startlingly similar for a fraction of the price.
Try looking at bigger marketplace sites such as ASOS, which won’t compromise their quality but still offer a wide range of brands at outlet prices
Finally, as the weather gets cooler, it’s time to invest in a good pair of boots: in the winter, you’re going to want shoes that actually keep your feet warm and protected from the damp slush lining the roads. Practicality aside, though, they’re the easiest way to elevate any outfit for when you’re heading to the pubs and clubs, making them a worthwhile, versatile investment. Be warned: sturdy boots can take some time to break in and make comfortable, so it might be a good idea to wear them around the house before a night out so that your feet aren’t bleeding on the dance floor. Again, if the classic Doc Martens or Steve Maddens are way out of your student budget, try outlet sites like ASOS for quality options at lower prices.
The main takeaway? Invest in long-lasting, versatile shoes – they will serve you better than anything you find mindlessly scrolling on a fast fashion site!
