Warwick society spotlights for freshers’ 2025: STEM edition

The SciTech section reached out to many of the amazing STEM societies that operate at Warwick ahead of Freshers’ week! If you’re interested in any area of STEM, have a look at the descriptions in this article, each one written by a member of the society. Don’t forget to go along to the societies fair in Freshers week to chat to the members in person and get involved!

Warwick Aerospace Society

Founded in 2014, Warwick Aerospace is the official University of Warwick branch of UKSEDS (UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space). Our society exists to bring together students who are passionate about spaceflight and aerospace innovation, providing a platform to collaborate on exciting projects and meet like-minded enthusiasts. Open to all disciplines and skill levels, Warwick Aerospace is more than just a society – it’s a launchpad.

This year, we’re proud to run three flagship projects:

  • Mach-26: A team designing, building, and launching a rocket carrying a CanSat payload for an international competition and conference held each summer at Machrihanish Air Base, Scotland. Last year they competed in Category three, with a two-stage rocket built for a target altitude of 2.5 km, deploying a CanSat that used machine learning for its onboard mission.
  • Rocketry: The team competed in the National Rocketry Competition last year, which included designing, building, and flying their own student-made rocket.
  • RC Aircraft & Drones: Where members create UAVs, learning about aerodynamics, propulsion, control systems, and flight testing in the process.

Whether you’re an experienced engineer or simply interested in exploring aerospace, Warwick Aerospace provides opportunities to develop skills, work on real projects, and connect with others who share your interests. Join one of our events to meet the team and find out more about us at: warwickaerospace.co.uk!

Warwick Black STEM Society

The Warwick Black Stem Society is a new society aiming to bring together Black students with STEM backgrounds and create a network where members feel equipped to succeed academically and professionally. ‘Per veritatem ad innovationem’ – our slogan, meaning ‘through truth and innovation’ – reflects the values guiding our conduct and ambition.

We view ourselves as not just a society, but a network where Black talent from multiple academic backgrounds can thrive. We have already begun the work to ensure this, and with sponsorship and backing from organisations such as Jane Street and Deutsche Bank, the foundations for this exciting new journey have already been firmly established.

Our aim is to ultimately become a recognised hub for Black excellence in STEM at Warwick, inspiring collaboration across multiple disciplines and supporting the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Warwick BioSoc

BioSoc is a student-run academic society that’s involved with the School of Life Sciences (BioMed, BioChem, Neuroscience, and Biological Sciences). However, everyone is welcome! We organise both social events (for example, circling, bar crawls, movie nights, and more) as well as academic events (academic talks, trips, and more). We have our weekly BioCafe every Monday at 6pm in GLT3, so feel free to attend for free pizza and advice on your degree. If you’re a fresher joining Warwick this year, follow us on Instagram and sign up to our mentorship program, where you’re paired with a second or third year who will help you immensely with your course.

Warwick CyberSoc

CyberSoc is a friendly and inclusive community with a love for all things cyber. We regularly compete in major CTFs and run our own technical and non-technical events for members. From talks to workshops to study sessions, we cover everything we think you need! We also offer a great deal of social events for when you need some time off.

Warwick ChemSoc

Warwick ChemSoc is a vibrant and welcoming society, open to all chemists and non-chemists, bringing together undergraduates and postgraduates from across the University of Warwick. Alongside being a supportive academic community, we’re a fun and lively society with a wide range of exciting social events, from regular meet-ups to our spectacular annual ball and the highly praised ChemSoc Tour!

Warwick Engineers Without Boarders

Warwick Engineers Without Borders is a society that “puts global sustainability at the heart of engineering” where students from any background come together for hands-on challenges, epic socials, and the chance to work on projects that genuinely help people. Whether you’re into problem-solving, want to develop leadership skills, fancy some free pizza at our events, or just want to try something completely different at uni, there’s something here for everyone. No engineering degree required, just curiosity and a willingness to think outside the box! For the latest information on events follow us on @ewbwarwick and join the society through the SU website.

Warwick Integrated Sciences Society

The Warwick Integrated Sciences Society is all about bringing together anyone with a passion for science, no matter the field. We love exploring how different areas of STEM connect and how they can help tackle modern scientific questions. Alongside our academic side, we also have a small but vibrant social community through regular Warwick traditions such as circling, as well as bowling nights and other fun socials that welcome students both from the Integrated Natural Sciences programme and beyond. We also host inspiring talks every term, giving our members the chance to hear knowledge from amazing researchers from all over the world. Past highlights include Nobel Prize winner Sir Paul Nurse and Harvard Professor Richard Losick. Whether you’re after ground-breaking science or exciting socials, our society offers the best of both worlds.

Warwick Marrow

Warwick Marrow is a student-led branch of Anthony Nolan. Our goal is to recruit potential lifesavers onto the Anthony Nolan stem cell register and to raise funds to allow stem cell transplants to happen.

Transplants are used to help individuals affected by a variety of illnesses from blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma, or myeloma to sickle cell anaemia. Transplants must be from a donor who is a genetic match, which is why it is so important to expand the register. In particular, there is a smaller pool of donors from black, asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds, meaning that people from these backgrounds have a smaller chance to receive a lifesaving transplant.

90% of donations are done via peripheral blood stem cell collection (PBSC), where your stem cells are filtered out of your blood after a series of hormone injections. The remaining 10% is via bone marrow donation, which is usually necessary for younger patients. Another important part of Marrows work is fundraising. Lifesaving is pricey, costing £40 to add each potential donor in addition to research and transplantation costs.

So how can you take part?

We have plenty of events from fundraisers to swabathons, and the more of us there are, the more life savers we can recruit! We are a friendly bunch and would love to have you join us as a volunteer. In addition, joining the register is an amazing thing you could do for someone in need! Links to volunteer chat, donor signups, and our just giving can be found at https://linktr.ee/WarwickMarrow.

Warwick Physics society

Warwick Physics Society (PhysSoc) is a student-run society that supports students during their studies through both academic support and social events for them to get to know other students. We are aimed at Warwick students undertaking Physics-based degrees, as well as those who have a general interest in the field. We aim to make available any academic support that physics students may need or want as well as putting on a huge range of fun and exciting events and trips.

What do we do?

  • Run regular socials! These include bar crawls, laser quest, bowling, circling, and much more!
  • A yearly spring ball, shared with Statistics and Maths Societies.
  • Trips abroad to places like Budapest, Prague, and CERN.
  • Physics Café – a weekly event involving a short talk from an academic and an informal help session.
  • Mentor Scheme – we pair first years with higher years so that they have someone to turn to for help or advice about the course.
  • Provide student-written revision guides as well as other useful material.
  • Organise student-led revision sessions around exam time.

Warwick Psych Soc

At PsychSoc, everyone is welcome – whether you study psychology or not, there’s a place for you! We host a wide range of events including circles, bar crawls, crafternoons, and our much-loved therapy dog sessions. New members are always welcome, so feel free to join us at any time. Lastly, at the end of the year, we celebrate with our highly anticipated annual ball. To stay updated on socials and events, follow our Instagram @psychsocwarwick.
