Alcaraz proved a tall order for Sinner to overcome in US Open Final

Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner 6-2,3-6,6-1,6-4 to secure his second U.S. Open championship, and second Grand Slam title of the year. This victory placed Alcaraz atop the ATP rankings with 11540 points, dispatching Sinner from his 65-week reign. At just 22, the Spaniard also became the youngest player ever to win multiple Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces – hard, clay, and grass.

Commentators drew comparisons to Federer and Nadal, as the match proved to be a display of extraordinary technique and skill

Both men arrived at Arthur Ashe in blistering form sweeping past their opponents. The Spaniard stormed to the final past opponents like Novak Djokovic and Jiri Lehecka while the Italian’s matchup put him against Felix Auger-Aliassime and Lorenzo Musetti. Together they set up an almost inevitable final, another showdown of tennis’ most compelling new rivalry. Heading into the showdown, the Spaniard led their head-to-head record 10-5. The final drew the attendance of several A-listers including Lindsay Lohan, Courteney Cox, Steph Curry, and Sergio Pérez. The attendance of U.S. President Donald Trump along with his family and cabinet was the one that ultimately became the point of intense discussion.

Some reporters suggested Alcaraz appeared tense during the pre-match interviews and warm-up, but he curbed those speculations by quickly winning the opening set. Right off the bat, Alcaraz was on the offensive keeping Sinner on his toes by constantly varying his shots. Sinner seemed to stabilise from the first-set loss by winning the second set, breaking Alcaraz’s U.S. Open run of winning in straight sets. But the Spaniard quashed the Italian’s composure by racing through the third set in just 29 minutes with his mix of drops, slices, and loopy balls.

If 2025 proved anything, it is that men’s tennis going forward will be marked by the presence of Sinner and Alcaraz

Commentators drew comparisons to Federer and Nadal, as the match proved to be a display of extraordinary technique and skill, and a clash of physical and mental stamina. Early in the fourth set, Sinner sent a forehand wide which created a clear shift in momentum towards Alcaraz. From then on, the Spaniard asserted control over the rallies and closed out in fitting fashion, a dominant ace that cemented his claim on the crown.

Sinner mentioned post-match: “I tried my best today. I couldn’t do any more”, demonstrating that Alcaraz’s US Open form was simply unplayable. He also congratulated Alcaraz who returned the praise, making clear that the two have utmost admiration and respect for each other even amidst great strife. Already dubbed,‘The New Two’ and ‘Sincaraz’, the pair have split this year’s Grand Slam titles with the Italian claiming the Australian Open and Wimbledon, while the Spaniard triumphed at Roland Garros and the U.S. Open. If 2025 proved anything, it is that men’s tennis going forward will be marked by the presence of Sinner and Alcaraz, starting with the approaching ATP finals.
