Crafting the perfect airport fit for your next getaway

Following a challenging and lengthy term of exams and assignments, many of us Warwick students will be jetting off on a much-needed getaway. Whether it’s a girls’ trip, a wholesome family holiday, or a solo adventure, feeling comfortable at the airport is essential to start your journey as you mean to go on (i.e. having the best time of your life). But who says a comfortable airport fit can’t be chic at the same time? This article will explore some airport-crush worthy styles that will turn heads, keep you comfy, and can be put together quickly with items you already own.

The importance of layering:
First, variable climates make layering a staple, particularly for overnight or early morning flights. We all know the UK forecast can be unpredictable, if not vastly different from the temperature of the place you’re flying to. This makes an outfit with plenty of layers perfect, keeping you regulated regardless of the temperature where you are. Practicalities aside, layering can add a pop of colour and make your fit much more unique!

If you’re into the classic airport ‘athleisure’ look, this could be a zip-up hoodie over a seamless cami top, vest, or t-shirt. Alternatively, a dress and cardigan will create a lovely, feminine look. Either way, sweatshirts, cardigans, joggers with shorts underneath, hoodies, and linen shirts are your best friends here. They can even double as a blanket for sleeping on the plane or at the airport if your flight gets delayed (though let’s not go there).

Florals and light, neutral or pastel colours create a whimsical look that will make you want to pack your picnic blanket

Long skirts:
Maxi, midi, midaxi, you name it, these skirts are perfect for your next airport fit. You might be tempted to pack them straight into your suitcase. Still, the way they cover the leg area whilst also being summery, cute, and usually made of comfortable silk, linen, or cotton fabric ticks all the boxes of temperature regulation, comfort, and style. They are also great for layering with cardigans and jumpers, looking equally lovely with open or closed-toed shoes. Florals and light, neutral, or pastel colours create a whimsical look that will make you want to pack your picnic blanket. If skirts aren’t your thing, a pair of well-fitting linen-blend trousers also fulfil the same qualities; they’re breathable, soft, and create a classy, minimalist look.

The art of accessorising:
Thoughtful use of accessories can transform an outfit you would throw on when running late to your 9am (or in this case, your flight) into something that will turn heads. Gold jewellery can create a glowy, warm undertone to your outfit reminiscent of the summer sunshine. These don’t have to be expensive either; you can find some beautiful pieces second-hand, or cute and affordable matching sets in shops like Lovisa and H&M. Sunglasses are also great because not only can they add a chic dimension to your outfit, but they are also incredibly practical for protecting your eyes during sunny early morning take-offs or airport transfers. Hats and hair accessories like claw clips are great examples of accessories that add that finishing touch to your travelling outfit.

Finally, a good airport bag won’t slip off your shoulder easily, in case you have to carry both your hand luggage and your suitcase simultaneously

Stylish and practical hand luggage:
Your hand luggage bag’s contribution to your airport fit’s aesthetic should never be underestimated. In addition to this, it must follow your airline’s size requirements and be sturdy enough to carry all your essentials (like your little clear plastic bags for liquids and a beach romance paperback). A lightweight, over-the-shoulder handbag with plenty of small compartments is perfect. Colours like baby pink, matcha green, and butter yellow are trending, and can add a summery touch to your outfit and are ideal for getting in the holiday mood. Alternatively, a white, cream, beige, tan, or chocolate bag will go with anything. It allows you to maintain a more neutral, minimalistic colour palette that can be equally light, summery, and airy.

Whatever your vibe, make sure your bag has a zip for peace of mind so nothing will fall out when it is inevitably chucked around at security. Don’t forget that plenty of small compartments are useful to keep all your essential things in one place. If you’re like me, there is less chance of panicking about losing your passport if you can’t immediately find it. Finally, a good airport bag won’t slip off your shoulder easily, in case you have to carry both your hand luggage and your suitcase simultaneously.

Whether you’re holidaying in the UK or abroad, soak up that sun and have a fantastic break before your next chapter, whether at Warwick or beyond!
