Mohamed Salah extends Liverpool career
The only looming cloud in an otherwise stellar season for Liverpool was the uncertainty over the futures of Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander Arnold, it is a problem that within a week seems to have been solved.
There has long been speculation over Salah’s future, in April 2024 he had a very public fall out with Jurgen Klopp after being dropped against West Ham and in November he told media (in regards to staying on at Liverpool) that he was ‘more out than in’. These all fuelled talks that the Liverpool star could be on a move away from Merseyside after eight years at the club.
Salah’s new deal, which will see his salary rise to £400,000 a week, will extend his stay at the Reds to at least 2027
Liverpool fans must have been fearing the worst when Trent Alexander Arnold’s summer move to Madrid was all but confirmed and talks between Liverpool, Salah and Van Dijk stalled. Losing one of their players instrumental to their success under Klopp would be bad enough but to lose all three would be nothing short of catastrophic.
They were, however, able to breathe a sigh of relief as Salah put pen to paper and Van Dijk looks set to follow. Salah’s new deal, which will see his salary rise to £400,000 a week, will extend his stay at the Reds to at least 2027. His value to the club was readily apparent yet again this weekend with a delightful assist to Luis Diaz saw Liverpool edge past West Ham and saw them step ever closer to they first Premier League title in front of the Kop faithful.
There was a fear at the time that Salah could be swayed with a move to Saudi, who were willing to offer an eye watering sum of 400 million for his services, but he was not tempted by what so many aging footballers had been: a lucrative contract to see out their playing career in the controversial sports washing Saudi league.
His two-year contract gives him a decided level of freedom, with most players over 32 being given the one-year extension
Salah has been a revelation to Liverpool since he signed back in 2018. He scored 243 goals and 109 assists, being central to all five trophies he has won at the club. And he shows no sign of stopping, now 32 he looks to break the 30-goal barrier in the Premier League for the first time (currently at 27).
Salah is key to much of Liverpool’s attacks and will be essential to Liverpool as they regroup next season ready to fight off potential challengers to the Premier League crown. His two-year contract gives him a decided level of freedom, with most players over 32 being given the one-year extension, meaning Liverpool are gambling on him maintaining the stellar form his wages reflect. If Salah does keep up his form however, the deal is crucial to the hopes of Liverpool next season to achieve their tantalising dream of the treble.
Salah has marked himself a chapter in Liverpool’s illustrious history books, he is a true Liverpudlian, and fans will hope that the extension of his contact will mark the continued success they have enjoyed so much in recent years.
