Warwick v Coventry: An overview of Varsity 2025
Yesterday, the University of Warwick’s campus was filled with sporting action as the home side took on Coventry for Varsity 2025. As Warwick collected points, Coventry fell behind, and as the day drew to a close, it was Warwick who took the win.
The morning saw 5 competitive sports be played as Warwick took on Coventry in women’s and men’s football, archery, men’s table tennis and men’s basketball. By lunch, Warwick were in the lead by 8 points.
The first fixtures of the day were women’s and men’s football. Women’s football saw a disappointing result for Warwick as the home side went from winning 3-2 at half time to finishing with a 3-3 draw when the final whistle blew. Warwick’s men’s football squad put up just enough of a fight to secure a 1-0 victory. Warwick’s Student’s Union’s Vice President for Sports, Louis Gosling, was on the sidelines for the men’s game and described the action as “excellent” but “nervy”. Gosling emphasised that “our boys were on top” and that he was “confident that they’d finish it off”.
These games were passionate demonstrations of university sport as all teams took to the court with an evident drive to win and numerous fans cheering them on in the stands
In archery, Warwick and Coventry finished with scores of 244 and 209 respectively.
Following on from archery, cheerleading occurred at the Sports Hub. Warwick Devils had 3 teams take to the floor whilst Coventry put on 1 performance. Speaking after their performance, members of Devils described the “team spirit” of the club and highlighted the “effort that the girls put in”. These routines by the Devils hyped up those watching on and prepared everyone for what was to be a thrilling game of men’s basketball.
The men’s basketball match was fast paced and highly competitive but it was Warwick who stole the victory with a final score of 79 to 63.
Whilst basketball was being played out, singles table tennis games were occurring. In table tennis, Warwick won once more.
The afternoon started with two highly eventful and spirited fixtures, women’s volleyball and women’s basketball. These games were passionate demonstrations of university sport as all teams took to the court with an evident drive to win and numerous fans cheering them on in the stands. The results of both games were wins for Warwick.
It was the home team who earnt the points in swimming although many were disappointed as they were not allowed to watch the races.

Despite this disappointment, the atmosphere in the main area of the Sports Hub remained positive with dance, cricket, netball, fencing and futsal still to take place. Warwick took the win in each of these competitive fixtures.
Outside, men’s hockey and women’s hockey were underway. In hockey, Warwick dominated again as they won both matches with a goal difference of 6 and 4 respectively.
It was at 18:30pm that the final whistle blew on Varsity, ending a 9 hour day of sporting action. Warwick secured their 35th consecutive victory with Coventry securing only 1 point.
Whilst this year’s event was, perhaps, less competitive than that of previous years, the crowds were large and the cheers were loud. Each fixture encapsulated the essence of university sport and showcased some of Warwick’s best sporting talent.
