Best chocolates for Easter

Easter is just around the corner which means spending time with loved ones, going to Easter celebrations, and, of course, chocolate! Everyone knows that chocolate is a huge part of the Easter celebrations and a great way to celebrate the end of Lent. But why exactly do we have chocolate at Easter? And what are some of the best Easter chocolates? Whether you love a classic chocolate egg or want to opt for something new, keep reading to find out the importance of chocolate at this time and what I would consider some of the best chocolates.

The tradition actually started from real eggs, that were associated with rebirth and given as gifts around Easter

At this time of year, it is important to remember the origins of Easter and amongst all the delicious chocolates consumed, it is easy to forget why chocolate has become a huge part of the Easter celebrations. Lent, the six weeks leading up to Easter, usually involves fasting or giving something up to reflect and remember the foundations of Christianity. This period, then ends on Easter Sunday, hence the celebration and eating hearty meals and chocolate. Chocolate eggs have been available in Britain since as far back as 1873. The tradition actually started from real eggs, that were associated with rebirth and given as gifts around Easter. It then developed into a chocolatey tradition as a luxury. The history behind why we eat chocolate eggs around Easter time should not be forgotten.

So, with the history side covered, let’s get into the best Easter chocolates that you can buy to celebrate the Easter period, whether you are going to buy them for yourself or give it as an Easter gift to a loved one. Every year, around 80 million Easter eggs are sold. Hopefully, these rankings will give you an idea of what ones are worth buying.

Classics
Personally, I feel that you cannot go wrong with a very classic, simple Easter egg. Eggs that have been around for years and have a simple recipe always tend to be a favourite. Cadbury chocolate is always a winner, and they have a variety of eggs for sale. A simple milk chocolate Cadbury classic will always be appreciated. I also enjoy mini eggs which have recently been trending for their giant share bags. Away from the big brands, I always enjoy supermarket own classics. Not only are they great value but they also tend to be great tasting and it’s always fun finding a new underrated chocolate egg.

Fun
A fun chocolate egg makes a great gift and a way of brightening up this busy time of year. M&S have been very creative this year with their Easter chocolates from dinosaur shapes to highland cows. A couple of my favourites from the M&S range is their biscuit egg which looks amazing and is a great spin on the classic chocolate egg. Another interesting one is their salted caramel egg-spresso Martini egg which not only offers a great play on words but sounds like a great flavour for adults and cocktail lovers. On the slightly pricier side, Hotel Chocolat undoubtedly thrives over Easter. My favourite currently seen on their website is the ‘Extra Thick Easter Egg – Milk to Caramel’ – the thick chocolate and caramel shell is filled inside with truffles and mini chocolates from their range.

Luxury
Whilst cheap and cheerful eggs are absolutely amazing this time of year, others may prefer a more luxurious option. As mentioned, Hotel Chocolat has some great, pricier eggs. Also, another favourite of mine is Lindt. Whether it’s their famous bunny-shaped chocolates or their Lindor truffles, they offer a deluxe range. On the extremely high end of the luxury spectrum, one has certainly caught my eye. Last year, The Dorchester’s Luxury Easter Egg retailed for £60. It featured hazelnut praline with two layers of luxury milk chocolate encased with caramel and sea salt. It comes wrapped in gold foil and in a beautiful box. I have no doubt they will be releasing something similar in 2025 but whether it tops the cheaper versions, I’m not so sure.

My all-time favourite has to be the Cadbury classics, but I would love to try some luxury options to see how they compare

Vegan options
Of course, we couldn’t have an article about the best Easter chocolates without some vegan options. Sainsbury’s currently has a free-from-gluten and milk rocky road Easter egg. I like how just because it is in their ‘free from’ range, it does not compromise a fun flavour. Another brand that has been successful in its Easter vegan range is Happi. They offer chocolate eggs made with oat milk as a great alternative.

I hope this has given you some inspiration for Easter gifts or chocolate to try yourself this year. My all-time favourite has to be the Cadbury classics, but I would love to try some luxury options to see how they compare. I hope you enjoy lots of chocolate and have a happy Easter!
