Your at-home spa day 101
Self-care and wellness routines are becoming widespread and discussed all over social media. There is plenty of discourse about the ‘best’ way to spend a night in, with extensive steps and lots of products. However, at-home spa days can be simple and affordable, they should prioritise calmness and relaxation, a step away from the stresses of the day.
Unlike sheet masks or balm-textured face masks, a mud mask has a much thicker creamier feel on the skin
A really luxurious product that can elevate your routine would be using a hair mask before an indulgent bath. Essentially a deep conditioning treatment, hair masks are applied to damp hair and left to restore dryness, creating a nourishing coating over the hair follicles. These can be bought cheaply from most beauty stores from an array of brands with different claims (shininess or preventing breakage) as well as for different hair types (coil-like curls or dead straight). Leaving this treatment on for 10 minutes or even up to an hour intensifies the feeling of clean, hydrated hair that the average person doesn’t have time for in their everyday routines. This makes for an especially idyllic evening.
Whilst your hair mask is working wonders, why not use a mud face mask to create a spa-like feel? Unlike sheet masks or balm-textured face masks, a mud mask has a much thicker creamier feel on the skin. They often dry down to have a matte look before being ready to be washed off. Mud masks deeply cleanse and clear clogged pores for a strong skin barrier. These treatments typically take 10-15 minutes and allow you to completely submerge into a relaxation period with no distractions. This is the perfect time for some calming music, diffusing essential oils in the room, or just complete meditation. Despite having the ultimate lux feel, mud masks can be bought accessibly from most high-street beauty retailers – The Body Shop offers one for £20 that is very well reviewed and vegan.
To accompany you along this spa experience, drinks and snacks are essential
Since your skin is now deeply cleansed and looking purified, why not give your under-eyes some of the same attention? Under-eye patches have become a recent phenomenon and trend, blowing up for all the right reasons. With an ultra-cooling feel, these comma-shaped patches sit neatly under the lower lash line hugging the fine skin from the inner corner to the temple. With a 10-minute wear time, the patches seek to freshen the skin and de-puff for a brighter, more awake feeling. Skincare in the under-eye region should always be considered, with fine skin often highlighting skin damage more than elsewhere. It is important to treat this area with serums and creams to prevent damage. These patches can reduce the appearance of under-eye circles whilst also feeling cold and relaxing – like the feeling of cucumber on your eyes.
To accompany you along this spa experience, drinks and snacks are essential. They would be supplied by the spa so why not have them at home? When in a hot, product-infused bath, large iced water is essential. You don’t want to risk that faint, light-headedness, so make sure to stay hydrated for the full duration. To step it up more than usual, why not infuse some lemon or cucumber with your water? For snacks, I think an array of fruits and dark chocolate is a fabulous combination. Some of my favourites include strawberries, red grapes, and kiwi.
