The Grammys 2025: fashion roundup
The Grammys are as much about fashion as they are about music, and this year’s red carpet did not disappoint. This year’s ceremony showcased a wide range of styles – some hits, some misses, and some that sparked intense debate.
Possibly the most discussed outfit of the night was that of Bianca Censori, who appeared on the red carpet alongside her husband Kanye West. However, it was not her clothing that was notable, it was the lack thereof. She initially wore a long black coat, which she then dropped to reveal a sheer dress which left nothing to the imagination. There has been some backlash, with some social media users questioning if it came under the umbrella of an indecent exposure charge – this has since been confirmed by the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) to not be the case. Additionally, Kanye took to Instagram to defend his wife, calling it “brave and hot”.
Among the best dressed, and the winners, was singer Sabrina Carpenter
Naked dresses dominated the red carpet this year, although not quite to the extent of Bianca Censori. In this instance, naked dresses refer to gowns that are predominantly sheer. For example, Paris Hilton donned a nude, sequined dress with a plunging neckline by Chrome Hearts, teamed with matching nude gloves, while singer Madison Beer also stunned in a see-through lace dress accentuated by sequins from fashion house Miss Sohee.
Black halter neck dresses were also among the most popular styles, demonstrated by both Miley Cyrus and Olivia Rodrigo. Cyrus stunned in a gown by Saint Laurent, complemented by chunky gold jewellery, while Rodrigo wore a vintage Versace dress, with Tiffany & Co. jewellery.
Among the best dressed, and the winners, was singer Sabrina Carpenter. On the red carpet, she wore a pale blue backless gown by JW Anderson, seemingly in reference to the 1964 Shirley MacLaine film, What a Way to Go. After her performance on-stage, she changed into a strapless gold dress, which she wore to collect the award for Best Pop Vocal Album.
Wicked star Cynthia Erivo wore a custom Louis Vuitton, donning a beautiful dark blue dress with a silver breastplate. However, what stood out was her accessories. Her silver jewellery was by Messika, and her trademark long nails were midnight-themed and bejewelled to match her outfit.
Taylor Swift wore a sequinned mini dress in bright red by Vivienne Westwood. In addition, she wore ruby earrings and a chain around her thigh sporting the letter ‘T’. Whether it was a reference to her song Guilty as Sin, or an homage to her boyfriend Travis Kelce, fans continue to speculate.
One look that failed to hit the mark was Gracie Abrams’. Chanel has, in recent years, struggled to live up to its reputation for red-carpet looks, and this was no different. Abrams wore a cream, ankle-length dress with a black belt, and a bridal veil. A look that seemed better matched to walking down the aisle rather than the red carpet.
Singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves opted for a more casual look for the red carpet. She wore a white tank top, paired with an embellished skirt and concho belt by the Ralph Lauren Collection in partnership with Jimmy Begay Jr. and Shiprock Santa Fe Gallery. She took home the award for Best Country Song.
Menswear often leaves a lot to be desired on the red carpet, with most opting for the basic tuxedo and the Grammys were no different. However, there were some standouts, and not all of them were good. Jaden Smith wore a Louis Vuitton tux but accessorised by wearing a castle on his head. The headpiece, by ABODI, was vampire-themed and framed Smith’s face.
There are some cases, however, where a plain tux may have been a better choice. One such case was Teddy Swims, who wore a beige, embellished suit with a matching baker boy hat by The Embroidery Studio and Meshika. However, Swims’ stylist, Christian Stroble, has since apologised for allegedly copying the brand Windowsen after the brand posted side-by-side images of Swims’ suit and their own design.
From new takes on classic looks to sheer elegance, this year’s Grammy looks had it all
However, Troye Sivan stood out in a lilac and grey suit by Prada. The grey suit jacket was paired with a sheer lilac shirt and a purple scarf. It was a refreshing change for the menswear category, and Sivan, a long-time ambassador for Prada, helped to design his custom suit. Also dressing outside the box was Shaboozey, who wore a metallic silver dinner jacket from Diesel, paired with a matching silver scarf.
From new takes on classic looks to sheer elegance, this year’s Grammy looks had it all. As one of the most watched red carpet events of the year, some outfits were guaranteed to divide opinions while others hit the mark beautifully. Despite this, fashion remains a key aspect of music’s biggest night.
