EasyJet expansion at Birmingham Airport set to support new routes and 800 jobs
Birmingham Airport has gained new destinations after flight operator EasyJet announced the arrival of two new aircraft for the travel hub, creating 800 new jobs.
Recent new destinations unveiled by the company include services to cities like Marrakech, Reykjavik, Hurghada, Prague, Krakow, Rovaniemi, and Innsbruck. These took off for the first time this winter.
For Warwick students, it means an easier commute to these holiday spots, given journey times to an airport will now be cut by over an hour and a half compared to the time taken to get to airports in London.
The newly established Travel Society was quick to take advantage of the opportunity with a trip organised to Marrakech on 16 January
One Warwick group – the newly established Travel Society – was quick to take advantage of the opportunity with a trip organised to Marrakech on 16 January.
At £150, the price was aimed to encourage more Warwick students to travel by providing trips closer to the student budget. Transport costs to the airport were additionally cut due to Birmingham Airport’s closer proximity to the University of Warwick.
EasyJet has now announced two more destinations, made possible by the arrival of two Airbus A320 aircraft this year. The new services, starting on 2 May and 3 June 2025, are to Gran Canaria and Malta.
Gran Canaria is one of Spain’s Canary Islands, off northwestern Africa. Malta is an island nation in the central Mediterranean, between Sicily and the North African coast.
The fleet expansion will also support the local economy, with each UK-based aircraft supporting around 400 direct and indirect jobs, and representing £27 million in UK gross value added (GVA).
