Wait for me, I’m coming to the West End: Original Broadway cast of Hadestown returns
Back and better than ever, ready to go ‘way down,’ the Hadestown’s original cast members are reuniting after five years. The run welcomes back performances from Reeve Carney (Orpheus), Eva Noblezada (Eurydice), Amber Gray (Persephone), Patrick Page (Hades) and André DeShields (Hermes).
The cast appeared in the show’s first run, before Broadway, in the Olivier Theatre at The National Theatre. Despite the show’s current popular reputation, in 2018 the show was met with uncertainty. However, the cast have since become household names. Eva Noblezada currently stars as Daisy in The Great Gatsby on Broadway alongside Jeremy Jordan; Reeve Carney most recently appeared onscreen in House of Gucci and onstage in Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark on Broadway; Amber Gray was most recently on Broadway in Eureka Day; Patrick Page made an appearance in the 2021 movie musical In the Heights as well as appearing as the Magic Mirror in Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White; André DeShields’s most recently appeared at this year’s third annual Musical Con and recently played Old Deuteronomy in Cats.
There is a lot of speculation surrounding this limited run (February 11- March 9 2025). Theatre pundit MickeyJo Theatre anticipates a potential proshot filming, as some dates which were initially available to book have since been removed from the websites.
Since it’s Broadway transfer and West End run, the show has been highly acclaimed and the surrounding anticipation is electric. The show recently celebrated its five-year anniversary and the original West End cast have recently released an album. Also on MT-Tok (the musical theatre corner of the internet), Wait For Me (Reprise) was a trending sound this summer, with people recreating one of the show’s most poignant moments on the revolving stage, utilising travellators in airports.
British audiences saw a diverse cast performing in their own accents, ranging from Nottingham to Trinidadian.
Unlike the Broadway cast, who uniformally speak with American accents, British audiences saw a diverse cast performing in their own accents, ranging from Nottingham to Trinidadian. This made for a colourfully multicultural show. Again, this begs the question of uniformity, as the ensemble and Fates are yet to be announced: will the cast be performing in American accents as the main cast are all American? Additionally, the casting of the Fates is also left ambiguous as they are yet to be announced, which provokes speculation over whether the West End casted Fates will remain or be recast.
The narrative revives Greek mythology in a timeless yet contemporary story set in the modern world. The tales of Hades and Persephone are interwoven with that of Eurydice and Orpheus. The show is an embodiment universally loved and acknowledged themes; climate change, resilience, hope, community, fear verses love and industry verses nature.
The show received a Grammy as well as eight Tonys at the 73rd Tony Awards ceremony, as well as being nominated for 14 awards total which was the highest that year.
The show with the current cast (along with its evolution from the National to Broadway and back to the West End) has the five original principal performers and ensemble to thank for setting a well-grounded foundation for what the production has become today. The show received a Grammy as well as eight Tonys at the 73rd Tony Awards ceremony, as well as being nominated for 14 awards total which was the highest that year.
The Broadway stars have already sold out on their five-week run for next year and further casting is yet to be announced. So, the question is, who do we think will complete the renewed casting? Who do you want to see?
