Support for Ukraine continues in Warwickshire as war’s third anniversary approaches

With the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine approaching in February 2025, Warwickshire’s local authorities continue to pledge support and assistance for Ukrainian refugees.

Warwick District Council stated: “As the devastation in Ukraine continues, our thoughts and prayers are with its people. We stand ready to offer support.” Since March 2022, over 850 Warwickshire residents have participated in the Homes for Ukraine scheme – a UK government visa programme initially granting refugees three years of leave to remain, now extended by 18 months.

Among those benefiting from the scheme is Yuliia, an aspiring Ukrainian fashion illustrator whose story highlights resilience, hope, and the kindness of others. Before the war, Yuliia worked at a well-known art studio in Ukraine as an administrator in fashion illustration. On 24 February 2022, Yuliia’s life changed when war broke out in Ukraine. Within hours, she decided to flee her home country and seek refuge in the UK, connecting with her sponsors through Facebook.

“Balancing work and study was challenging, but I’m proud of what I have achieved. I hope my story inspires others to never give up and see rejection as redirection to something even more beautiful.”

She admits that adjusting to life in the UK was rather challenging, particularly in finding employment. After two months of applications, she secured her first job at a local coffee shop. Despite a busy schedule, Yuliia continued to pursue her passion for art, publishing an online book to help beginners learn fashion illustration and earning a design certification through an online course. She now lives independently of her sponsors.

Reflecting on her experience, Yuliia said: “Balancing work and study was challenging, but I’m proud of what I have achieved. I hope my story inspires others to never give up and see rejection as redirection to something even more beautiful.”

Warwickshire County Council Families Spokeswoman Councillor Sue Markham praised residents for their compassion, stating: “Through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, hosts like Yuliia’s sponsors provide not only a place to stay but also a sense of stability and support during what has been an incredibly difficult time for many.”

Markham further expressed gratitude to the sponsors, calling their selflessness an example of what makes Warwickshire a special place to live: “I would like to personally thank Yuliia’s sponsors for their kindness and for demonstrating the very best of Warwickshire.”
