A splash of pink: University of Warwick enhances Campus by introducing The Forum
The University of Warwick has unveiled The Forum, a versatile new space aimed at enhancing the student experience from the 2024 academic year onwards.
Located by the Library Café, The Forum is a multipurpose area developed with a focus on sustainability and innovation. Designed using high-impact sustainable materials, the area features a variety of tables and seating options, inviting students, staff, and visitors to learn, work, and socialise.
Notable features include umbrellas to accommodate the unpredictability of British weather and greenery, with climbing plants adorning pink metal fences and adding a refreshing natural touch to the space.
Unlike other campus venues, the Forum is an unprogrammed space that requires no booking, making it freely accessible to the campus community. It can host a range of activities, from performances and intellectual debates to informal gatherings, as long as it is not already in use.
According to the developers, the vibrant colour was chosen to foster a playful, creative atmosphere where ideas can flourish.
The Forum’s striking, pink-coloured design has drawn considerable attention. According to the developers, the vibrant colour was chosen to foster a playful, creative atmosphere where ideas can flourish. The colour pink is also expected to invoke feelings of tranquillity, warmth, and nourishment, creating an inclusive environment that invites people from all backgrounds within the campus community.
This project was realised through collaboration with Creative Giants, a Brighton-based creative consultancy known for transforming spaces through art. Their previous work includes partnerships with major institutions, artists, and events such as Glastonbury Festival. Raskl Art Architecture executed the vision, ensuring the design came to life with precision and attention to detail.
Student reactions to The Forum are mixed. Some have praised its boldness, describing it as “a refreshing change to campus.” Others, however, have criticised the bright pink colour scheme as contrasting too sharply with the rest of campus. One student commented: “It definitely stands out, but it’s too much.” Concerns have also been raised about the practicality of the seating in colder weather.
In a previous Boar survey, respondents decisively rejected the new space, with 81% of students deeming it “awful”.
While opinions remain divided, the Forum’s unconventional design has undoubtedly sparked discussion and curiosity across campus. Its role within the university landscape remains to be seen, but for now, it is ready to be enjoyed by anyone seeking a place to connect, create, or relax.
