The open world of Caravan Sandwitch; A game review

Caravan Sandwitch is a refreshing indie gem that invites players to explore a vibrant world steeped in themes of peace, love, and environmental mindfulness. It steps back from the adrenaline-fueled action of mainstream titles, offering a serene experience for gamers who crave discovery, meaningful NPC interactions, and a slower pace of gameplay. In doing so, it carves a niche for itself amongst exciting sci-fi narratives that emphasise storytelling and emotional resonance over high-octane excitement.

The core gameplay spans about 6-7 hours, but this timeframe offers ample room for expansion with the wealth of side quests and collectables hidden throughout the secret planet of Cigalo. Exploration is key: players traverse the world by van and on foot, solving puzzles and unlocking new tools which allow you to delve deeper into Cigalo’s mysterious terrain. Each discovery feels earned, whether it’s a new tool to access previously unreachable areas or an upgrade for your trusty van.

Where Caravan Sandwitch truly shines is in its atmosphere

The game’s mini-map is particularly handy, showing active quests and aiding navigation across the sprawling environment. While the mini- map is an invaluable tool for tracking active quests and navigating the sprawling terrain, the controls for the van can sometimes feel unwieldy. Coupled with a camera that occasionally struggles to keep pace, these technical hiccups detract slightly from the otherwise fluid experience.

Central to the journey is Sauge, the fiery-haired protagonist whose vibrant personality matches the colourful world of Cigalo. With her striking red hair and signature blue jacket, Sauge reminded me of the Lusia Dorfer from Dungeons of Hinterberg, with both characters exuding a blend of mischievous charm and adventurous spirit. Sauge’s journey is more than a search; it’s a mission fuelled by 6 years of longing and unanswered questions. As she traverses Cigalo’s vibrant landscapes, piecing together clues about her sister’s disappearance and being haunted by a witch in the sand, players unravel a dual narrative: the story of Cigalo itself and Sauge’s personal quest for closure and reunion.

Where Caravan Sandwitch truly shines is in its atmosphere. The game’s art style is vibrant and whimsical, immersing players in a world that feels alive and tenderly crafted. The soft palette and stylized environments evoke a sense of wonder, drawing attention to the beauty of nature and its intricate details. However, the visual experience isn’t without flaws. Occasional slowdowns and graphical glitches break immersion, though these issues are minor and would likely be addressed in future patches.

The soundtrack is an exceptional standout feature, seamlessly blending into the game’s meditative tone. Gentle vocals inspired by folkloric hymns are layered over still beats, creating a well-balanced backdrop for exploration. Each track feels thoughtfully composed, providing a holistic sensory experience that resonates long after the credits roll.

Heartfelt themes and captivating world, it carries an important reminder of the beauty of slowing down

Caravan Sandwitch’s environmental narrative weaves a poignant tale about humanity’s impact on nature and the enduring strength of the planet’s ecosystems. The game doesn’t preach but instead invites players to reflect through its thematic storytelling and richly detailed world. From abandoned industrial ruins overtaken by vegetation to quiet moments of harmony between human and natural elements, every scene tells a story that deepens the player’s connection to the game’s themes.

Despite its minor flaws, Caravan Sandwitch delivers a heartwarming experience. Its recurrent emphasis on exploration, community, and environmental consciousness marks it as a standout title in the indie gaming landscape. It’s a game that rewards patience and curiosity, offering players a chance to escape the chaos of everyday life and immerse themselves in a world of tranquillity and introspection.

For fans of narrative-driven titles or those looking for a game that prioritizes storytelling and atmosphere over traditional action, Caravan Sandwitch is a journey well worth taking. With its heartfelt themes and captivating world, it carries an important reminder of the beauty of slowing down and breathing in the peculiarly unique cosmos surrounding us.
