The best places to eat on campus

Warwick University’s campus has a plethora of food outlets to cover all your food cravings and wants. With so many options, knowing where to go to meet your needs can be tricky. So, I thought I’d break down the best spots, with the relevant price points, which is all a part of making these huge decisions.

Food Station is a great sandwich bar to keep you full and satisfied for a busy day at university

Let’s start with midday lunches. It’s not always advisable to spend your money on campus day-to-day. The academic weapons among us have done their meal preparation and are bringing their organised containers of food onto campus five days a week. Some of us, however, are not wired that way and opt to buy our meals to get us through the academic day. A personal favourite of mine is The Food Station (formerly The Bread Oven), which is located upstairs in the Student Union. This eatery offers both a cold baguette selection and hot nachos. The baguettes are hugely popular with midday purchasers, and the range of proteins, salads, sauces, and breads, make this a great option that does not become boring or repetitive. My peers and I often discover new combinations and favourites week by week. This Subway-style option is far more reasonably priced than the national chain, with a starting price of £4.50. Trialled last year, the nacho bowls are also a cult favourite. Offering beef, chicken, and vegetarian chilli, this midday alternative is a great pick for someone who loves a hot meal on the go. The toppings also add versatility to your meal, with sour cream, cheese, jalapenos, and guacamole as a perfect accomplice to your chilli of choice. Once again, priced fairly reasonably at £5, this is a great pick me up in your week, and naturally a spot you will find yourself coming back to time and time again.

The Duck is certainly the most affordable pub on campus, and a great place to meet with friends without having to break the bank

Moving onto another SU establishment, the infamous Dirty Duck: the university’s classic pub. The Duck has a warm, busy atmosphere throughout the week, with societies and flatmates often meeting over food or just some drinks. The menu covers all pub traditions with an array of burgers and pizza, as well as some more diverse choices such as the chicken katsu. There is always a meal for everyone at your party with great, extensive vegetarian options too. The Duck is certainly the most affordable pub on campus, and a great place to meet with friends without having to break the bank. It is also a great spot for drinks, with lots of choices of alcoholic and soft drinks. There are often drink’s deals throughout the week too. The Duck’s weekly quiz and karaoke make the pub a staple in students’ weekly routines.

If a restaurant feel is more to your taste, Benugo, located in Warwick’s Art Centre, is a fabulous pick. Aesthetically, the restaurant is gorgeous with lots of foliage visible from the walk down from the University Interchange bus stop. The meals are lovely – specifically, the stone-baked pizza, which certainly feels authentic and tastes amazing. This spot is pricier than other sit-down establishments on campus, but has a more luxurious vibe. Therefore, Benugo is a good selection for celebrations and birthdays on campus, or better still for people coming to visit – perhaps they can cover the bill?
