Warwick slips down QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024

The University of Warwick has dropped out of the global top 25 for two subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, but remains world-leading in two, The Boar can report.

A slip in standing saw Warwick’s rankings for Mathematics, and Business and Management Studies, fall from 19th and 22nd, to 27th and 26th respectively.

In Statistics and Operational Research, and Economics and Econometrics, the two other subject areas where Warwick ranks in the global top 25, there was also a drop, from 16th and 22nd, to 20th and 23rd.

The University did see an increase, however, in the number of subject areas ranking in the global top 50, from seven in 2023 to ten this year.

This boost was brought about by Warwick appearing in the rankings for Library and Information Management and Marketing for the first time, as well as Philosophy, which leapt from outside the top global 100 to 45th place.

The QS World University Rankings, published annually by education analytics firm, Quacquarelli Symonds, rank over 5000 universities across the world in over 19,000 different courses.

Their overall global rankings for 2024, released in June last year, previously saw Warwick slip from 64th to 67th place.

Now, the rankings have been broken down into individual subject areas, allowing for more in-depth analysis.

The figures show that in the five broad academic disciplines that QS sorts courses into – Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences and Medicine, and Social Sciences and Management – Warwick slipped down the global tables in four out of five areas.

The University remained in the global top 50 for Social Sciences and Management (41st), but slumped to 66th place in Humanities, having previously scraped in at 50th place in 2023.

Warwick fell further out of the global top 100 for Natural Sciences, from 86th to 113th place, and out of the global top 200 for Life Sciences and Medicine, from 185th to 220th. It climbed three places, however, for Engineering and Technology, to 144th.

University spokesperson

Overall, the University dropped in the global rankings for 18 subject areas but managed to rise in 14, increasing its total number of subjects in the QS World Rankings from 30 to 32.

A spokesperson for the University was upbeat, saying: “Our academic reputation speaks for itself, and we will continue to deliver the world-class education and research for which Warwick is known.

“In total, the number of subjects featuring on QS subject rankings has risen from 30 to 32 this year, and we hope this number will continue to rise.”
