TV characters who didn’t deserve to die
You are most definitely lying if you told me that you’ve never felt utter frustration over a character’s death in a TV show. I definitely have. Whether that’s Negan killing Glenn in The Walking Dead or Ned Stark being beheaded in the first season of Game of Thrones, we’ve all been there. Below are a few characters who I think came to the most undeserving deaths in their TV shows.
Robb Stark – Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones: the TV show with the most gruesome deaths of all. For those of you who may not know, the show, spanning 8 seasons, explores the ongoing conflicts between the most noble and respected families of Westeros. As they all fight over who should sit the Iron Throne, an ancient enemy known as the White Walkers, thought to be long gone, return after a thousand years.
Robb Stark (played by Richard Madden) is the first-born son of the Stark family who rule over the North from their seat in Winterfell. With Robb lasting only 3 seasons, it is undeniable that his death came as a shock to everyone. The infamous Red Wedding episode (titled ‘The Rains of Castamere’) is regarded as one of the most harrowing events in television history and has been said to be one of the most unforgettable episodes of the Game of Thrones series.
Though his choices certainly contributed to his downfall, Robb definitely did not deserve the fate he received. Yes, he made many mistakes, including his betrayal of house Frey, but the way he went was just too cruel. Watching his own wife and unborn child die before him and then being killed in front of his own mother was an utterly traumatic thing to watch and I always head over to YouTube to watch people’s outraged reactions to this episode. It’s very amusing.
Carl Grimes – The Walking Dead
Carl Grimes – what a character! He had so much potential, so much to offer, but like many of the characters in The Walking Dead, he succumbed to the infectious bite of a Walker. The series follows a large group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse, led by Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), as they fight to survive and avoid threats from both Walkers and humans.
Carl Grimes (played by Chandler Riggs) starts the series as an innocent and frightened 12-year-old boy but slowly becomes hardened and tough like his father, Rick, after experiencing traumatic loss throughout the apocalypse.
During the midseason finale of Season 8, Carl reveals that he has been bitten by a Walker, which was a big shock to fans of the comic books as this was not the way things were supposed to turn out.
So many people were expecting Carl Grimes to be one of the survivors of the series, and many were angry that he didn’t make it. Killing the son of the main character was a big mistake, especially when we know that Carl could’ve become the leader of the group once Rick left the show. The way Carl died as well, being bitten by a Walker, was a very anticlimactic way for his character to go. Very undeserving indeed.
Sam & Henry – The Last of Us
The thought of these two characters makes me want to cry. Their brotherly bond was unbreakable all the way up until their absolutely devastating deaths in episode 5 of the series. The Last of Us is set twenty years into a deadly pandemic and follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they struggle to survive.
Sam (Keivonn Woodard) and Henry (Lamar Johnson) are brothers, two people that Ellie and Joel meet along their journey. Henry, the older brother, is fiercely protective of Sam, his deaf younger brother, and is ultimately his guardian and father figure.
After being infected, Sam’s inevitable death is truly heartbreaking. For a character who was so brave and was just trying his best in a world that was against him, Sam’s tragic death was so undeserved. He was just a kid and just wanted to help Ellie and Joel.
After experiencing his unavoidable yet still extremely distressing death, his brother, Henry, is left in shock. Despite Joel’s quick attempts to calm him down, viewers had to deal with the disturbing moment that Henry took his own life. The thought of not being able to live without his brother was enough for Henry to decide his own fate. It was truly devastating, and these two brothers deserved so much more.
And that’s just to name a few! There are so many characters in television history whose deaths shocked the world, and there are so many that I wish had lasted until the end. Unfortunately, that is the way things go with TV shows, and you can’t deny how shocking some have been.

Reading this just makes me want to cry! Although most of these deaths were necessary for the storylines, they really did leave me in despair! Love everything you’ve written about them 🙂
