Varsity 2022 gets underway
Finally, after a year’s hiatus due to Covid-19, Varsity is back with a bang in 2022. In 2020, Warwick secured their third decade of straight Varsity wins – we have never lost – and will be looking to repeat the feat this time around.
There are 29 competitive fixtures ahead of us on this Varsity weekend. From snow sports to football, table tennis to esports, it is going to be quite an intense weekend of sporting action ahead of us. With 2 points up for grabs in each fixture, and 64 to win in total, Warwick need only take home 17 victories (33 points) to win the ultimate prize.
Action got underway on Friday with the Equestrian, and the Warwick Riding Club came away with a well deserved victory in the team event.
In front of a packed crowed at the Sport and Wellness Hub … it felt as if Varsity were truly here
Heading into the evening, it was the basketball team’s chance to get in on the act, with the women’s team just missing out on victory. In front of a packed and vibrant crowd at the Sport and Wellness Hub, with a sizeable following and throbbing atmosphere from both universities, it felt as if Varsity was truly here.
From the beginning, however, Coventry was in front, and they managed to extend that lead as the game went into the last quarter, eventually coming away with a 55-40 victory.
At the moment, therefore, things are relatively even between the two universities, and we can only hope that that changes across the weekend, with Warwick, as I’m sure will happen, stretching their lead and taking away a 31st Varsity victory.
