Warwick Snowsport ploughs ahead in Varsity
On Varsity Friday, the Warwick Snowsport Warriors travelled to Ackers Adventure dry ski slope in Birmingham, to face off their rivals from Coventry Ski and Snowsports Club in the annual derby. Arriving at a record turnout from Cov; with a host of rookie competitors competing across a variety of disciplines, the Warriors knew they would be in for a fight.
The day began with one of Warwick’s strongest disciplines, the men’s individual ski slalom. A standout performance from club veteran Sam Holt (1st) who also was the only person to attain a sub-9 sec run during the day. An equally commendable run came from the club president Jack Copson (3rd) who saw the men take a clear victory. The female individual ski category saw similarly strong displays from Warwick’s competitors, however despite their best efforts, especially by rookie fresher Fiora Luecke (2nd), the Coventry ladies reigned supreme to make the competition even.
Although there were lots of stiff challenges, both the Warwick 1s and 2s saw success
Hosting an array of up and coming talent, the mixed ski category was always set to be an exciting competition to watch. Although there were lots of stiff challenges, both the Warwick 1s and 2s saw success, beating the Coventry 1s which handed the lead back to Warwick.
In a historically difficult category, in which a high level of talent and concentration is necessary to succeed, the boarding teams performed outstandingly. In the male boarding category, Harry Williams (1st) saw victory for the Warriors, narrowly beating his Coventry rivals in a tightly contested race. Despite impressive runs from Emeline Julia and Francesco Bagaini, who had earlier also raced in the skiing, Coventry just pinched victory in the mixed boarding races, leaving some spectators unsure as to who had the final lead.
Warwick had once again been victorious, beating Coventry 21-19
As the day wrapped to a close and the points began to be tallied, it became clear that although modestly outnumbered in support, but graciously led in spirit by Captains John Andrews and Matt Smith, Warwick had once again been victorious, beating Coventry 21-19. A great way to kickstart the varsity weekend. Congratulations must be given to our rivals for showing up in numbers this year and of course, to all the Warwick competitors for achieving such stellar results.
