Krept and Konan are coming to the Copper Rooms
Casyo Johnson and Karl Wilson, the 28-year-olds known together as the South London rap duo Krept and Konan, have been continually making music for the past 12 years. Introduced to one another in 2005 through a mutual friend, the pair joined a gang in Gipsy Hill known as ‘gipset’, and began to make music with them, shared around local schools using bluetooth. By 2009 the pair had broken off to become a duo, and soon after released their first mixtape. By 2011, they achieved their first taste of fame with a cover of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s ‘Otis’ which achieved over 5 million views within 5 days, before being removed for violating copyright. On the back of this the pair were able to tour alongside artists like Skepta and secure features from Tinie Tempah, Giggs, and George the Poet, amongst others for their third mixtape. Following this, the duo rightfully earned a 2013 MOBO award for Best Newcomer.
Since then Krept and Konan have won a BET for Best International Act: UK, beating out the likes of Rita Ora, Dizzee Rascal, and Laura Mvula. Today they are still famed for their massive 2015 single ‘Freak of the Week’, featuring Jeremih, which stormed to Number 9 on the UK Singles Chart and was one of the inescapable sounds of that summer. The track was the first release from the pair’s first studio album, The Long Way Home, which reached the number 2 spot on the UK Albums Chart. They’ve continued to stay strong since, having released the twin mixtapes 7 Days and 7 Nights this past October, featuring artists including Skepta, Stormzy, J Hus, and Jhene Aiko, amongst others. The mixtapes reached number 6 and number 8 on the UK Albums Chart, respectively.
This February, Krept and Konan are coming to Warwick to give students a taste of their live prowess and play some of their biggest releases, thanks to Warwick Urban Society. The live show will take place in the Copper Rooms on February 8th from 10pm-2am, with support form DJ MJ, DJ Stutz, and DJ Larni. Tickets are available online, and are likely to sell out quickly.
