Warwick Men’s Football 4s 2-3 Coventry Men’s Football 3s

Coventry 3s solidified their position at the top of the Midlands 4C group, thanks to a frenetic 3-2 away win over local rivals Warwick University.

The visitors stormed out of the blocks and cemented their role in the ascendancy with two goals in the opening seven minutes. Warwick dug deep to bring themselves back to 2-2. However, despite their valiant efforts, a third goal from their rivals was enough to secure all three points and to steal a march on their Midlands rivals in the race for promotion.

The writing was on the wall for Warwick from just the second minute – when countering down the right hand flank, the Coventry winger attempted a cross-cum-shot which looped over the goalkeeper who was left stranded.

Just five minutes later, the away side doubled their advantage. Darting down the left flank, the left-winger managed to square the ball for the forward who had hung back to tap home their second of the match.

Much of the first half was spent by Warwick trying to regain some sense of composure and control over proceedings in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, Coventry could have put the game beyond Warwick’s grasp, but their shot stopper denied their opponents.

However, on 31 minutes, Warwick captain Henry Davis delivered a free-kick to the back post, which Huges Denis du Peage nodded back across to the edge of the area, which deflected in after Nessar Torkameni fired goalward.

After the interval, Warwick made a substitution as Marius Beaudoin was introduced into the fold, and it was his role which significantly altered proceedings.

10 minutes after coming on, a ball from the left was delivered with pinpoint execution into the area where the striker leaped and guided the ball past the Coventry keeper to tie things up.

With 25 minutes remaining though, against the run of play, Coventry delivered a free-kick which evaded all of Warwick’s defence before a visiting head pounced on the bouncing ball to restore the visitors’ lead.

Coventry later went on to hit the bar and the Warwick keeper was again called into action to keep his side in the mix.

But it was Warwick’s rivals Coventry who managed to hold on for all three points to take sole lead of the division heading into Christmas.
