Warwick set to honour respected high-flyers with doctorates

Five individuals will receive honorary doctorates from the University from 18 to 20 January 2017 during the ceremony held at Butterworth Hall in Warwick Arts Centre.
 
Professor Dusa McDuff, Anne Wood, Professor Jill Lepore, Dame Stella Rimington and Mechai Viravaidya make up the list of honours.
 
Mathematician and Professor at Barnard College, Dusa McDuff will receive the Honorary Doctor of Science (Hon DSc). McDuff has taught mathematics at many institutions including Warwick and MIT.
 
Teletubbies creator Anne Wood CBE, will receive the Honorary Doctor of Letters (Hon DLitt). Wood founded Ragdoll Productions, which is based in Warwickshire. The company reaches young viewers in over 120 countries around the world.
 
US Historian and Professor of American History at Harvard university, Jill Lepore, will receive the Hon DLitt. Lepore is a staff writer at The New Yorker and the author of the New York Times bestseller, The Secret History of Wonder Woman.

Her essays and reviews have appeared in many publications including the New York Times, The Times Literary Supplement and the Yale Law Journal.
  
Dame Stella Rimington, former Director General of MI5 and published author, will receive the Honorary Doctor of Laws (Hon LLD).

Rimington is the first woman in this role at MI5 and is the first Director General to be named publicly on appointment. She has served in many leading roles including Chairman of the Institute of Cancer Research.
 
Mechai Viravaidya, philanthropist, politician, and TIME Magazine’s “Asian Hero” completes the honours, set to receive the Hon LLD.

Viravaidya runs family planning and poverty reduction programs in Southeast Asia. He has received numerous awards including the United Nations Population Award.
 
Peter Dunn, Director of Press and Policy for the University, said: “The University is pleased to be able to make such awards to individuals of significant intellectual or cultural distinction, or those who have served the University, the country, or our local community.”
