Warwick Snow with a divine night of Kings
Kings is one of Warwick Snow’s favourite dry slope competitions – we compete in teams of either four or five and race against other universities from around the Midlands. Kings consists of four races overall, followed by a final in the summer against universities from all around England!
So far this year we have had two races and on Saturday 12 November we travelled to Stoke. This was a new location, and it was exciting to race somewhere where no one had ever trained or raced before! The slope offered fresh challenges compared to our home slope, Ackers, in Birmingham.
We had five teams competing at Stoke; three mixed teams, one ladies team, and one board team. Our first team consisted of our Competitions Captain Lizzie Roberts, treasurer Sam Holt, Josh Rooke, Josh Lahiri, and Alexis Justea. They breezed through the first round, however a fall and an injury meant that they were squeezed out of the podium positions. They finished fourth after beating Coventry 2s by well over 30 seconds.
Our second mixed team included President Courteney Griffiths, vice-president Constanze Vorrath, Social Sec Jack Lee, Tour assistant Ewan Oglivie and Dan Pugh. They also qualified for the second round, where they won every race! This was the first time that these five had worked as a team and it was great to see their team spirit shining through.
For many of our third team it was their first ever time racing. This team, made up of Eleanor Wardley, Benji Levine, Fraser Croome, Sander Holtof, and Alex Lythall, did exceptionally well – we look forward to seeing what they can achieve as they develop their skills, especially when they are able to train on our home slope!
The Ladies Team, which won the midlands round last year, also had a fantastic day. Their races took place after both the mixed and boarders, so they started racing quite late. The ladies raced over five races, and finished fourth. This provides them with a solid base to work on over the next two rounds.
Our boarders did exceptionally well too. The team – composed of Tour assistant Isy Moisy, Dan Pugh, Tour assistant Ewan Oglivie and Harry Williams – did not get distracted by the new location or roaring crowds and finished second. They’re now currently second overall in the Midlands league, second only to Loughborough. This was the first time that this team had raced together and we were delighted by their success.
We are all very excited for the rest of the season and these results give us a great foundation as we look to continue our success.
