Warwick has 8th lowest university crime rate
Warwick has the 8th lowest annual crime rates of any University in the England and Wales, according to 2016 data released by the Complete University Guide.
It has the second lowest crime rates in the Russell Group, coming behind only the University of York.
Warwick has 21.23 instances of reported crimes per 1,000 residents, with the figures calculated using students’ term time addresses. By comparison, York has 15.96.
The table is dominated by campus universities and agricultural colleges, which are generally quieter communities with fewer members of the general public.
It’s hard to say exactly why this is, but surely the threat of exile to the Warwick Castle dungeons is a key factor.

A spokesman for Warwick University said: “We are pleased to see that the hard-work and dedication of the University’s Security Services, and the valued contribution of the Estates Office, has led to Warwick being placed in the Top 10 for universities with the lowest crime rates.”
The Complete University Guide offered the following explanation: “It’s hard to say exactly why this is, but surely the threat of exile to the Warwick Castle dungeons is a key factor.”
Gerard Jones, an English Literature finalist, commented: “I feel safe on campus mainly because we’re at a top university, and while that doesn’t ensure safety 100% of the time, I feel the risk of violence is substantially reduced.”
