Why you should join Canoe Polo
We promised USP’s and that’s exactly what you’ll get. As Communications secretary Elise Martin explains, Canoe Polo is one of those sports that you would never try anywhere but at university – so why not give it a go?
Be a bit different
It’s a bit bizarre, not the kind of sport you start doing when you’re six. People realise you’re not standard. They may expect you to do rugby or cricket or hockey and you say you do that and people realise you’re different and unique and special.
Release your frustrations
You get to push people into pools and lakes and reservoirs and rivers. You can pretend it’s whoever you want, be it, that stupid boy/girl from Pop, that lecturer, those flatmates, even non material objects such as modules and problem sets. Whatever it is it can be pushed in.
BUCS magic
BUCS adrenaline is the best adrenaline you’ll feel. Over 30 universities with A team, Ladies, B team and Old Git tournaments. It becomes a weekend of drink, sunburn, camping, sun and sometimes snow. You will see polo at its best, witness the best sass and feel the 7am hungover match.
Feel the gains
Confidence comes along with guns of steel. Sass grows faster than skill. You cannot fear the ball and be good at attacking. You cannot fear players and be good at defending. Your sass will extend and be commented on as much as the tone that will build in your arms.
Hone your concentration
Teams are small (5 a side) so you always feel necessary. You will never sit in goal, you will have to sprint for goal. You will huff and puff, you cannot dawdle or else someone will push you in. So you will paddle and think about clever things later.
