Gilmore Girls Returns on Netflix
‘Oy with the poodles already’, Gilmore Girls is back! Yes, it’s true, our favourite fast-talking, coffee-drinking, binge-eating mother and daughter duo are headed back to our screens! Thanks to Entertainment Weekly (EW), we know that we will once again be able to escape to the quirky, yet comforting world of Stars Hollow, following the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, and all our favourite townies before the year is out.
EW released so many juicy Gilmore updates, you can almost imagine Babette (Sally Struthers) and Miss Patty (Liz Torres) gossiping over the magazine’s photos and revelations in Luke’s Diner. Interviews with the series creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and executive producer, Dan Palladino, revealed that there will be four 90 minute episodes (apparently inspired by BBC’s Sherlock format) to be shown on Netflix, titled Winter; Spring; Summer; and Fall, set in the present day (imagine Lorelai taking selfies!).
Melissa McCarthy will be back as Lorelai’s best friend, Sookie, which given McCarthy’s stardom status since Gilmore is huge news.
Town meetings will be in action again, with over 37 original cast members confirmed to return, including the recent announcement that Melissa McCarthy will be back as Lorelai’s best friend, Sookie, which given McCarthy’s stardom status since Gilmore is huge news. New characters can be expected too, with the leading lady from Sherman-Palladino’s other TV show: Bunheads, Sutton Foster, reportedly playing a big part in the ‘Stars Hollow: The Musical’ that will be in the Summer episode.
One of the biggest unresolved storylines that has frustrated fans since the series finale was the status of Lorelai and Luke’s (Scott Patterson) relationship. One of EW’s photos shows the couple holding hands, suggesting that they will be together in the revival, although Sherman-Palladino was quoted saying that they are not married. Who knows, maybe the revival will feature the perfect ‘June 3rd wedding’! Behind-the-scenes set photos have indicated that there may be a wedding on the cards, and it certainly would explain the return of many of the characters.
Casting calls have suggested the appearance of a few potential suitors, so Rory will have plenty of choice!
As for Rory’s love-life, we know that she will be single but dating, and the return of all three of her former boyfriends certainly makes the revival an exciting prospect for fans who have for years fought over Team Dean (Jared Padalecki), Jess (Milo Ventimiglia), or Logan (Matt Czuchry). Will Rory finally choose one? Or will there be a new man on the horizon? Casting calls have suggested the appearance of a few potential suitors, so Rory will have plenty of choice!
Probably the most intriguing photo was of Rory at her alma mater school, Chilton. The last we heard of Rory was that she was leaving for her first job reporting on Obama’s campaign trail, and given that Obama is now approaching eight years of presidency, one would have thought that the Palladinos might capitalise on this. There is no explanation as to whether Rory is now teaching there, or just a visitor, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Other photos showed Lorelai’s mother, Emily (Kelly Bishop), back with style, although it is upsetting to see her without husband Richard, after the sad passing of Edward Herrmann last year. According to interviews with cast members and the writers, the revival will honour Herrmann, so it will be interesting to see how this is done, and how his absence affects the show.
EW has given us a small insight into what is to come; Gilmore fans can look forward to finally hearing Sherman-Palladino’s long-teased final four words, and see the much-loved show come to the conclusion that it truly deserves. So start pouring your large cups of coffee, order your favourite takeaway foods, dust off your flannel shirts, and get ready for what looks to be a triumphant return of the Gilmore Girls!
