Why World Book Day is important

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ith it being World Book Day today, I couldn’t help but ask why such a day exists. Surely people don’t actually need a day to remember why books are so phenomenal?

Yet, it’s quite clear that we do. With children’s books  often underrated, many fail to acknowledge the importance of reading them. Children’s books contain the greatest life morals, and a day dedicated to encouraging children to read highlights the importance of these morals.

Making reading fun for children is key in encouraging a love of reading. Through the act of using different voices for different narratives, they’ll remember the books and therefore the moral within it. Books which are illustrated alsi add an element of fun and makes characters more real.

Personally, one of my favourite memories of World Book Day is having to dress up as an inspirational character from a novel and having to explain why I had chosen that individual. Creating fun memories around books, it also caused me to think about the real reason as to why I loved this character.

Without a doubt though, the best thing about World Book Day is in the title: World. Books encompass the world we live in and through the act of translation, so many people can appreciate the same story.

World Book Day allows for children’s books to be celebrated and is necessary in remembering that the written word is one of the greatest mediums of communication.
