Fashion and Philanthropy: LINE has it all

On Thursday 11 February, Boar Lifestyle received the opportunity to live the high life and attend a fashion show. It wasn’t London Fashion Week, but we’re students, not celebrities, so we can’t really complain.

Warwick LINE is a society dedicated to creating and showcasing stylish and innovative clothing, while also raising money for UNICEF. The society was co-founded two years ago by Tala Esber who is now the President. Tala says that the society’s aim is to “inspire young individuals to unleash their creative identity [and] talk about issues that matter”. In their latest fusion of fashion and philanthropy, LINE donated the profits from the fashion show to UNICEF.

Everyone knows that most university societies have limited funding and connections, but LINE certainly didn’t let that hold them back. The exec did an amazing job of working with what they had, turning a plain hall into a runway LFW would be proud of.

Guests were even greeted by complimentary cocktails, which not only added to the sophistication of the event, but made the Deputy Editor-in-Chief and myself very happy indeed.

The theme of the show was “major cities”, with New York, Johannesburg,Paris, Tokyo, and Rio de Janeiro being represented in fashion. The models sauntered down the runway in ensembles ranging from ball gowns to beachwear. While a few of the looks were a little more generic than the boundary-pushing fashion I’d been hoping for, LINE’s fashion designer, Konstan Franz, did an impressive job of piecing together outfits and hand-stitching certain pieces.

Notable pieces included a neon pink hula-hoop dress and an androgynous patterned jumper-robe.

It was refreshing to see models of all body types and ethnicities on the runway, most of whom were Warwick students. Respect for LINE is due for crushing those Eurocentric beauty standards.

LINE’s fashion is reflective of their ethos – bold and pioneering. LINE is something different and the fact that they use their artistic talent to raise money for a good cause makes them even more admirable.

This fashion show is merely one feather in LINE’s cap. They raise awareness of their causes through photoshoots and posts on their blog, and also work collaboratively with Warwick UNICEF on Campus to organise events such as the WaterIs-Life Charity Run (due to take place on 24 February).

All in all, LINE has the Boar Lifestyle’s seal of approval: they are fashionable, fancy (did we mention the cocktails?!), and most importantly, dedicated to helping a good cause.
