60 extra study spaces for library

Following Warwick SU campaigns for a new library, the democracy and development officer, Olly Rice, has secured 60 extra study spaces for the library.

Mr Rice said: “we have received assurances from the Library that they will be aiming to install the extra spaces before Term 3.”

Mr Rice has also said that the SU will keep in regular liaison with the library to check on the details of the spaces, such as whether plugs will be provided and whether the spaces be set up in the silent areas.

When asked how else the SU would be ensuring there is sufficient study space for students in Term 3, Mr Rice commented:

“Myself and Charlie (SU education officer), when meeting with the Library management staff, pushed for the Library to book suitable and increasingly available lecture rooms or halls from the central booking system and advertise them prominently to students unable to find spaces in the Library or the Learning Grids around campus so they at least have somewhere suitable to study at such a high-pressured time.

“Should the policy I am proposing be passed by Students at the All Student Meeting, this will be what the SU will be mandated to lobby for every year until a new Library is built.”

The spaces will allegedly be distributed “across the library where suitable spaces exist that aren’t being utilised currently”. Mr Rice added that it was agreed that adding spaces should not be attempted if it were to make the studying environment cramped or unpleasant.

At the moment, the idea for a new library with an extra 2000 study spaces is just a proposed motion from Mr Rice and Miss Emily, the chair of education executive.

If, however, the Motion passes at the Referendum held on all policy after the All Student Meeting next week, the SU will then lobby the University to make an in principle agreement to add a second library to their capital plan over the next few years.

Given the fact that a second library might not be set up anytime soon, the 60 extra study spaces might be handy for students who have a hard time finding places in the library.
