Leamington light-up

On February 19, volunteers gathered in Leamington Spa to light up the town in a unique “guerrilla” lighting event.

More than 50 local volunteers used torches, filters and coloured glow sticks to artistically illuminate culturally significant buildings in the city’s Old Town (the area just south of the river), including the United Reform Church and the Creative Arches.

Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Action organized the event, with the additional support of the Portas project and Woodhouse/Marshalls.

According to the organisers, the aim was to “promote the beauty of Leamington Old Town” and “change the way you see the area”.

The event took place during the ‘Love Leamington’ month, and attracted locals of all ages who wanted to help brighten up their city.

Jeremy Ireland, project leader of Portas, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people from so many backgrounds coming together to celebrate the Old Town.

“We have such amazing assets left to us by generations of Leamingtonians, and it was great to see them lit up and made dramatic by sheer volunteer effort.”
