Warwick’s research is 8th best in the UK

The University of Warwick has been ranked eighth out of UK Higher Education institutions in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The REF ranked the research quality of 154 UK institutions based on a scale from world leading to unclassified.

A majority of Warwick’s research,  amounting to 87 percent, was classed as world leading or internationally excellent. Of this figure, 37 percent was rated as world leading research. None of Warwick’s research was unclassified.

The Institute of Cancer Research was ranked first overall for its research quality.

In addition to the overall ranking, 14 of Warwick’s departments were also ranked in the top 10 in their respective fields.

The English department achieved particular success in the assessment as its research was rated the best out of UK English departments.

Agriculture, Food and Veterinary research in the School of Life Sciences and Computer Science were both ranked second in their fields.

Warwick’s research in Mathematics, Statistics, Philosophy, Economics, Chemistry, Politics, Film and Television Studies, Theatre Studies, History, Classics and Law was also amongst the best in the UK.

Warwick’s vice-chancellor, professor Nigel Thrift, commented: “Warwick is about to enter its 50th anniversary year and this is a wonderful way to begin those celebrations. This result is the outcome of much hard work and commitment on a great many staff at Warwick.”

He added: “It confirms Warwick’s reputation as one of the UK’s and world’s leading research universities.”

The research assessment, which takes place every six years, is used to decide how much research funding universities will be awarded.

It is used by the UK’s four major higher education funding bodies, which will allocate £2 billion per year between 2015 and 2021 for research funding to UK universities based on the quality of a university’s research.
